  • Simple pitches at a working farm in the central Peak District
  • Bamford Edge and Hathersage open-air pool five minutes' drive
  • Farm eggs for sale on site; two pubs within a mile's walk
You’ll be pretty much right in the centre of the Peak District National Park when you pitch up at Winhill View – this site is on a working farm on the edge of the Derwent river, just across the water from the village of Bamford. That makes this a particularly excellent location for walkers, who can get to the likes of the Thornhill Trail, Bamford Edge and Ladybower Reservoir with just a short drive (or by setting out on foot). Mam Tor, Castleton’s caves, Bakewell and Chatsworth are all within easy reach by car too, so you’ll have no shortage of ways to fill days around here. If you’re heading out hiking (or in fact, even if you’re not…) there’s surely no finer way to start the day than with some farm-fresh eggs, which you can buy on site to cook up for an excellent breakfast. Come evening time, you may like to get a barbecue going (there are three shops within a 10-minute drive for supplies) or head out to a local pub – there are a couple of excellent ones within a mile’s walk. Back at the farm, you’ll be staying on simple but well-kept pitches within a peaceful field surrounded by trees, with access to a washing-up area and toilet/shower facilities.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: The field was flat with good space for pitches and cars. It wasn’t overly crowded. This is a secluded area which I’m sure had lovely walks etc. The farmer and his wife were quite friendly and showed the nearest pubs etc.

Disliked: The facilities were super basic. One portaloo and one shed-shower. It was misadvertised on this website as a toilet block. Due to personal preference, I would not have booked had the website contained the correct information for this site. If you’ve spent all day in the outdoors and need a little bit of home comfort (shower block/ multiple toilets) then this is not your site. The outdoor sink had only cold water and didn’t have a covering or area, which would’ve been nice. I’ve paid the same amount before for a site with much better facilities, so kinda feels like a rip-off.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Very small, quiet and peaceful camp site. Just what we needed as we stayed there with our 2 year old. I think she made more noise before bedtime then everyone else there. Winhill View is very close to Ladybower (7min by car and 30min walk). Very near is a beautiful local pub. 1 toilet and 1 shower on the campsite. Both very clean and tidy. We never met the owners during our arrival or departure. But would be nice to see them at some point if we would stay longer. This time we camped only for a night.

Disliked: Not a dislike, but rather a suggestion :) it would be nice if campers with small kids could get closer to animals and feed them, let's say with a food bought from you guys. At the time of our stay there were little cows, and she would love to feed them and pet their noses, but unfortunately way to them was closed off with a sign. So we just watched them from aside. But other than that I have no complaints :)

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked: Really lovely site - just as a described, a working farm with a field to pitch in. There's a sink, a portaloo, and a shower. Didn't use the shower but it looks exactly as described, basic but functional. The site is incredibly peaceful and quiet, and we were met by one of the farmers (I'm sorry, I can't remember your name!), who was lovely and made sure we had what we needed.

Disliked: The only slight issue was the sign posting to get from the road down to the site. We followed the googlemap pin but it didn't take us to the right place. We then called the numbers, were helpfully directed, and got there easily. I think the pin just needs an update, and the pitch up site needs a few more instructions. Signal in the peaks is delightfully poor, so relying on calling for directions could leave folks a little lost. With this issue sorted, the site is faultless. A lovely, simple pitch.
