Get the walking boots on and hike to the waterfalls in Reserve Jbel Khroufa (35 minutes’ drive), or take a stroll around the side of Lake Sidi Barrak in Parc Boulehia (25 minutes). For a day at the beach, head to Zouaraa (half an hour) for canoeing along the shoreline, fishing and dining on fresh seafood, or – if you’re lucky – you may have the soft sand of Plage WMB (40 minutes) pretty much all to yourself. Spot the bizarre pointy Aiguilles rock formations in the seaside resort of Tabarka (50 minutes), also known for its annual July jazz festival and the ruins of the Antica Tabarka Genovese guarding the town on a headland. Turning inland, Sejnane (45 minutes) is the production centre of terracotta cooking utensils, dolls and animal figurines made by the women of the town. And for more local history, you can see the remnants of a Roman villa at Ruines d’es Smadhia (45 minutes), while there are Byzantine towers still standing at the crumbling Forteresse Byzantine de Ksar Zaga (half an hour).
