Head to Santa Cruz de Tenerife (half an hour’s drive away) for city days of galleries, museums and botanic garden strolls. History and culture buffs will want to make tracks for the military museum, the museum of fine arts and the Museum of Nature and Man. If those have tickled history taste buds, a quick jaunt along the coast to the Pyramids of Güímar is a must for an explore of the 19th-century piles of lava rock that (in spite of their relatively recent creation) have historians scratching their heads. For days out of doors, there’s plenty to entertain active types: climb into the saddle for some horsey excursions 25 minutes away or get in the car for scuba sessions on the south of the island. On the way back to base, make a pitstop in Teide National Park for lengthy hikes and cable car trips over Spain’s highest volcano, or try Corona Forestal Natural Park for hiking and biking. Treat kids to a splashing good time at Siam Park's Thai-themed water park before bringing them to meet the animals at Monkey Park, both around an hour away. If that’s not satisfying their needs for constant entertainment, stick a little closer to home base for a day at the award-winning Loro Parque zoo, where they can hang with lions, tigers and capybaras.
