Message to all hikers on the Camino de Santiago (aka St James’s Way) – whichever of the ancient routes you’ve followed, you’re very nearly at the end point by the time you get to Camping Peregrino San Marcos. This relaxed and spacious site is seven kilometres from the centre of Santiago de Compostela, making it a handy spot for a stopover before the final push – or a place to retreat to for a well-earned rest once you’ve acquired your final stamp. That’s not to say that you have to arrive on foot at all – you’re equally welcome to come straight here and settle in for a holiday (with family and dogs in tow if you wish). There are numerous hiking trails nearby where you can get a taster of the area's scenery, and a shuttle bus runs to the city centre for easy days out exploring at your leisure. You might also like to head into the city for a meal (the seafood is particularly fine around here), although there's also a restaurant on site, and a barbecue area for alfresco self catering. Whether you’ve trekked across the country, taken a hike locally or just strolled around the city streets, the presence of a swimming pool on site for a refreshing dip is likely to be very welcome. The same goes for the beach bar, serving up cool drinks to end your day. A play area and games room are also on site to provide entertainment for the kids. Pitches here are spacious and shaded, sitting among the trees; they all have access to a launderette and washing-up area as well as toilets and showers.

喜欢: Facilities were clean and campsite is one of the closest to Santiago, pitches are bigger than described. Bus is frequent and only costs €1 (cash only)

不喜欢: The No 6 bus does not stop at the bus stop near the campsite despite it being on the bus map. It’s about a 1.2km walk to the bus stop in San Marcos.

喜欢: Proximity to Santiago. Although not advertised enough, you can catch the 6a bus from Club San Lazaro 2 (5mins walk) and then bus 6 coming back which drops you outside if you stay on it. Liked how sheltered it is in the trees and putting up a hammock to chill is fab. Facilities are clean and good

不喜欢: Pitchup states there is a swimming pool. This is there but it’s closed so don’t book the site based on this (which is what we did). Plus everything looks a bit tired and closed (think there was once a restaurant on site but the cafe is great and sells basic food)

喜欢: Hay bastantes arboles y sombra. La cafetería por las mañanas preparan un buen café y tostadas. Los baños durante nuestra estancia del 15 al 18 de agosto estaban limpias

不喜欢: Reservamos del 15 al 18 de agosto porque tenía piscina pero al llegar nos informaron que estaba cerrada. Nos sentimos engañados ya que no se indicaba esta información en la página web ni enviaron un email. A más de 30 grados tuvimos que pasar los días fuera buscando alternativas para aliviar el calor.

喜欢: Il posto era molto bello, pratico per chi viaggia in macchina, a piedi e in tenda. Le piazzole erano molto grandi.

不喜欢: Il wifi non funzionava bene (si connetteva e disconnetteva continuamente), i bagni erano sporchi.

当地景点

The gorgeous city of Santiago de Compostela is a wonderful place to spend some time – there’s heaps to see here, so getting the shuttle in and out a couple of times is a great idea. The spectacular cathedral is the city’s glittering highlight, with the huge Praza do Obradoiro square just outside. Simply wandering the streets of the Old Town is lovely too – looking out for places like Praza da Quintana and stopping for drinks and eats along the way. To get a good overview of it all, head to Monte do Gozo (five minutes' drive/half an hour's walk), which has fabulous far-reaching views across the city’s rooftops. There are lots more places to have a walk nearby too (often involving a river or waterfall), plus fishing and horse riding. If you'd like to see a bit more of this part of Spain, Vigo, A Coruña and Pontevedra are all within an hour's drive, as is the lovely wine-producing coastal town of Cambados – all make excellent day trip options.
