With the Pyrenees on one side and the Mediterranean Sea on the other, it’s safe to say that Camping Can Coromines is in a splendid spot for exploring the many landscapes of Catalonia.
This small family-run site is in an attractive location about five minutes’ drive from Besalú, so it’s got that peaceful rural vibe but it’s also conveniently located for when you need shops and places to eat, or fancy strolling round a pretty medieval town. And it’s well located for days out, too – there are several natural parks and lots of outdoor activities nearby (hiking, climbing, horse riding, swimming…), and you can get to a beach or the city of Girona with about 40 minutes’ drive. Barcelona could be on the cards, too – it’s about an hour and a half away.
It’s not all about the surroundings though; the site’s own facilities are just as enticing. The cool freeform pool is likely to catch your attention straight away, and there’s also a play area, a ping pong table and a small restaurant serving seasonal food created with ingredients from the owners’ much-loved organic garden.
Pitches at this site are nicely set among the trees and hedges for privacy, shade and a lovely green view, and they have access to handy practical facilities including a launderette, a chemical disposal point, a wifi service and a bathroom block with showers and toilets (including disabled facilities). Dogs are welcome to join you for a break here.

Exploring on foot is a good idea around here – follow trails in the Salt de Martís nature reserve, take a walk to Sant Llorenç de Sous monastery (half an hour’s drive) or see the extraordinary landscapes of the Zona Volcànica de la Garrotxa Natural Park (20 minutes). For other outdoor pursuits, try a round at Torremirona Golf Club (15 minutes), a swim at Lake of Banyoles (15 minutes) or a horseback outing in Pla de l’Estany with Can Costa Hipica (20 minutes).
Besalú (five minutes) is a lovely place to stroll around, with lots of historical buildings and the Circusland museum to visit. Olot (20 minutes) is another place worth visiting, with the Espai Cratèr science museum and lots of modernist architecture to see. Beyond those, you may also like to take trips to Girona (40 minutes) or Barcelona (an hour and a half).
Or how about a seaside day? Sant Martí d’Empúries (40 minutes) is a good destination for a beach and watersports, with Aiguamolls de l’Empordà (35 minutes) a little further north for wildlife watching and kayaking.
