Dreaming of a rural getaway without having to leave the reassuring embrace of civilisation? Càmping Lacus, a family-friendly site in a quiet forested area close to the centre of L’Escala on the Costa Brava in Catalonia, allows you to settle down in a scenic spot while being within easy reach of everything you might need for your hols. The site is less than five minutes’ walk from Riells beach – the largest in L’Escala – where you can have a go at windsurfing or kayaking, take out a catamaran or simply doze on the sand. When you’re feeling the need for some retail therapy, the shops are a short walk away. On site, laze under the trees or plonk yourself next to the lake for a spot of fishing. If you’d prefer to get a bit more active, but still in peace and quiet, have a game of pétanque, rack up a game of billiards or take a walk around the lake. No idle times are quite complete without a good feed, so head to the on-site restaurant for a meal, then waddle over to the bar to unwind on the terrace with a drink or two (it’s your hols – no one will judge). If you’d prefer a change of scenery, there are plenty of restaurants within an easy walk.

喜欢 El sitio muy bonito, fuimos con niños pequeños y nos gustó mucho. Estuvimos muy tranquilos y está en muy buena ubicación para ir a pasear, tiene un supermercado justo delante y un bazar por si te falta alguna cosita.

喜欢 Very tight to get into pitch because of trees.when it rained had 2 inches of water outside motorhome. Only shop open no pool till April. Staff helpfully. Good to visit Barcelona

喜欢 In town centre. Lakeside pitch in woodland. 200 metres to the beach and marina.

不喜欢 Most expensive site we used in six weeks. Worst toilets and showers. No paper, no soap, no hot water, no hand dryer or towels. Large site mainly permanently sited caravans with locals living in them.

喜欢 Sanitaires propres et l'eau des douches est bien chaude avec une bonne pression mais c'est vrai qu'un petit coup de jeune serait appréciable.

不喜欢 Showers and toilets were extremely tired - we didn’t use them after seeing them. Most of the site is occupied by what seem to be resident caravans and the whole place looks scruffy and uninviting.

There’s more to L’Escala than just the beach. Càmping Lacus is within walking distance of the scenic Old Town and the museum of Alfolí de la Sal – while you’re wandering the streets, be sure to take the time to try the local delicacy: anchovies. There are oodles of factories to visit, and the Museu de l’Anxova i de la Sal is worth a stop. The site is a 10-minute drive from the remains of the millennia-old trading town, Empúries, where you can explore the ruins that date to the second-century BC and visit the Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya. For a taste of human folly, pull on your serious shoes and hike to the spectacular but unfinished Montgrí Castle at the top of Torroella de Montgrí mountain then make yourself feel better about the successes of human civilisation with a visit to the Fundació Mascort gallery, both less than 20 minutes from Càmping Lacus. If you want a broader urban experience than you’ve had in L’Escala, the museums, galleries, restaurants and shops of the city of Girona are less than an hour from the site. The Museu del Cinema-Col·lecció Tomàs Mallol, the Passeig de la Muralla and, 20 minutes outside the city, the Fundació Mona primate sanctuary are must-sees.
