There is – such – a lot one could wax lyrical about with this Cantabrian site. Camping Playa Joyel is in a splendid location, on the edge of a spectacular beach with direct access to it. And that's just to start you off: there's also a blue pool and other facilities to keep you leisurely, all in the wildlife haven of the Trasmiera Ecopark nature reserve. On top of that, the site is right by the sea, with direct access to the wide sandy stretch of those very pics. Other very fab facilities on site are the swimming pools, padel and tennis courts, sports fields, an outdoor exercise course, play areas and open-air barbecues. There's also a kids' club and – you don't get many of these to the euro – an on-site mini zoo where guests can meet cows, bulls, ducks, pygmy goats, deer, pigs, peacocks, ostriches and chickens among many other species. The animal park is open for visits a couple of times a week, but eager beavers will still be able to see the animals through the fence during the rest of the year.

From the A8 towards Santander, take the exit signposted Beranga and follow the directions to Noja. Once in Noja, follow Avenida de Ris to Playa de Ris until you reach the beach. Turn left leaving the sand dunes to your right and you will find the site on your left.

That beach in the pics directly accessible to Camping Playa Joyel is Playa Del Ris, a place of several surf schools with surf lessons and surf kit hire as well as blue sea and wide golden sands. Once/if unpeeled from the sands, the island of San Pedruco and its small medieval chapel are within easy walking distance. Foam fans will find good surf from its beaches and fisherfolk also like to cast off here: ask the Playa Joyel team for tips if you fancy doing either. Townwise in the region, try days out at the small but famed municipality of Comillas and its baroque and medieval buildings, and Potes, the capital of the Comarca of Liébana (do also try the grape brandy...). The city, beaches, harbour and Magdalena Palace of Santander are all within driving distance. If you'd rather stalk some of the locally found species instead, the site is in the Santoña, Victoria and Joyel Marshes Nature Park, a marshy place along the Cantabrian coast known for its marine wildlife and migrating birds.

喜欢 I think this is probably the best camp site we have stayed in, so much so that we extended our stay.

It's certainly the cleanest.

The site is on the edge of the beach.

不喜欢 We had some mobile data coverage but it would have been a bonus to have free WiFi

喜欢 Plenty of washing up/clothes washing facilities with running hot water, all within easy walking distance from the pitches. Chemical toilet emptying points were numerous and never more than a short walk away.
The swimming pool was large, clean and well maintained with the reassuring presence of a life guard permanently in attendance.
A 50 m walk from one of the site entrances revealed a fantastically beautiful sandy beach.
There was a shop on site. The prices were inevitably higher than the local supermarkets but daily bread collection was made very convenient.
The camp staff were excellent at enforcing the midnight noise curfew.

不喜欢 Although the site pitches were large, the owners permitted semi-permanent renters to fill them to overflowing with multiple awnings. This had the overall effect of making the whole camping experience feel massively overcrowded, especially on a weekend when the Spanish families descended en masse! Holiday makers wanting a quieter experience might want to keep this in mind. A simple solution would be to site visiting motorhomes and caravans to the less used regions of the campsite away from the semi-permanent renters.
The site wifi was useless, especially at weekends so I just topped up my data for less money

喜欢 shoulder season but really nice park, reasonable size pitches available, direct access to a beautiful beach, pool open onsite, pet-wildlife farm open Saturday evening but open longer hours during summer.

不喜欢 It didn't bother me but just to be aware only one toilet block open weekdays during off peak, all appeared open at weekends. The front of the park nearest reception and pool area has seasonal resident pitches for tourers with awnings.
It gets very busy Fri- Sun and must get packed during summer.
