Unwinding should come naturally at Camping El Quinto, a small, family-run site at the foot of the Sierra Cabrera mountains. Laid out among its peaceful grounds are communal areas made for exactly that: a dedicated chillout zone with comfy seating, a playground, a swimming pool and a bar-café. To set the scene some more, this family-friendly site is in a natural area on the outskirts of the whitewashed town of Mojácar, 10 minutes’ walk from its Moorish old town and five minutes’ drive from its sandy Mediterranean beach and entertainment district. Staying here means that you’re set to stroll around its museum, castle, plaza and fountain whenever you have a moment free and stop by its restaurants to sample town specialities like pescado frito or gachas in hardly any time. Camping El Quinto has been set up to make sure its guests feel completely at ease, with lovely decor including guests’ home flags flying at the entrance, an Indalo sculpture (a local totem said to bring good luck) and cosy nighttime lighting. Plenty of amenities are at your service too, from toilets, showers and a washing-up area to bicycle hire and a launderette. Small grocery shops are within walking distance of your stay, adding another convenience.

With the narrow streets of Mojácar old town just a 10-minute walk from your base, it’s easy to become laser-focused on that one stunning location. However, you are also within reach of the captivating city of Almería (55 minutes’ drive). A Moorish fortress, a 16th-century cathedral with a gorgeous Gothic ribbed ceiling and subterranean tunnels – once used as shelters during the Civil War, and now open to tourists – are what it’s most well-known for. Spending some time strolling in nature is totally easy, too, with the Sierra Cabrera mountain range sitting behind the site. Hikes over its rocky volcanic terrain begin around half an hour’s drive away; there’s a trail from Turre to El Jali and another shorter one called the Cortijo Grande Loop with views of the Med. A bit further away are the hikes of the Cabo de Gata (55 minutes), including the Caldera de Majado Redonda leading to the park’s cauldron-like old volcano caldera. No need to hike again if you aren’t ready – birdwatching, boat tours and diving are all possibilities there. One final trip to Garrucha Port (15 minutes) could be in order in the evening to watch the fishing boats come in and auction their catch. It’s next to yet another sandy beach and a splendid selection of bars and restaurants.
