City sightseeing break or hilltop rural retreat? You can have both when you choose to stay at Parque Campismo da Penha. Set atop the wooded summit of Monte da Penha, this mountain campsite is surrounded by forest and overlooks the UNESCO-listed historic city of Guimarães (15 minutes’ drive). Hilltop pitches are tucked under the shade of the tree canopy – so everything stays pleasant and cool in summer – and there’s also a communal shelter with a fully equipped kitchen and a lounge with TV, fireplace and cosy sofas for use in cooler seasons. Once you’re all settled in, spend leisurely hours around the swimming pool with the kids, or go off adventuring (taking any accompanying four-legged friends with you, of course) to spot the massive granite boulders scattered around the forest floor. From the site, there’s also direct access to a centuries-old pilgrimage route, taking in the Gruta Nossa Senhora de Lourdes (five minutes’ walk) and art deco-style Penha Sanctuary (10 minutes). Alternatively, spend urban days out exploring the sights of Guimarães – much the quickest way to get down there from your mountaintop base is by the Teleférico de Penha cable car.

喜欢: The cool shade on all pitches on a very hot day. The bar The cable car station down to Guimarães 5-10 minutes away Hot showers!

不喜欢: Beautiful looking pool -“nearly ready “ but still closed ! Antiquated showers - felt like I was back at school/ a camping museum!! Chemical disposal - looked more like a pitch and putt!- odd - had to aim for very small drain - in a very overlooked area .. Van got tired on long uphill climb !

喜欢: Fabulous setting and freedom to park up where you wanted.

不喜欢: Nothing really. Bathrooms dated but clean.

喜欢: Lovely, peaceful location. Friendly staff. Plenty of shade. Nice and cheap.

不喜欢: Was a little surprised that the pool was closed already in mid September (and looked like it had been closed a while already). Not that it bothered us as we were only there for a couple of nights, and it was raining anyway!

喜欢: Location of camp site in wooded forest. Close to Guimaraes and wonderful views from around site. Staff very friendly.

不喜欢: The shower facilities a bit dated.

喜欢: La tranquilidad del camping, había un buen ambiente sin ruido y en el que podías disfrutar de los sonidos de la naturaleza. También la amabilidad del personal del camping. Tuvimos problemas con la cocina eléctrica que llevamos para cocinar y nos ofrecieron herramientas para intentar solucionarlo. Siempre están a tu disposición y con un muy buen trato. También nos gustó que había mesas de madera por todo el camping a disposición de los usuarios y que había baños con duchas en varios puntos del terreno.

不喜欢: Las instalaciones que estaban ya un poco viejas y que no había césped, si no que el suelo era de tierra, lo que hacía que lleváramos los pies llenos de tierra para la tienda y, al llover, se llenaba todo un poco de lama.

喜欢: - The location of the campsite. - the staff are very friendly.

不喜欢: The facilites are clean but pretty basic. Nice location , but the blatant disregard for quiet late at night by certain campers spoiled the overall stay. More effort needs to be made to ensure the quiet is observed after 22-23h00

Explored the pilgrimage spots on Monte da Penha and keen to see more spectacular religious landmarks? Head for the Convento de Santa Marinha da Costa (10 minutes’ drive) to admire its fancy baroque-era facade and intricate stone carving in the interior. Another famed pilgrimage spot is the ornate sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte in Braga (40 minutes), approached by a wildly OTT stone staircase, or you can wind back the years to Iron Age times with a look around another evocative site – the restored round houses and Pedra Formosa burial chamber at Citânia de Briteiros (half an hour). Keep the cultural theme going in lovely Guimarães (15 minutes) and have a potter around the decorative-art collections in the striking 15th-century Palace of the Dukes of Braganza, or a climb up to the battlements of the medieval castle for views over the town and back to Monte da Penha. History and heritage attended to, take a stroll around the photogenic cobbled streets of the old city centre, then seek out Largo da Oliveira square; it’s time to settle back in a terrace café with a glass of chilled local vinho verde.
