Keen on camping, less enthusiastic about putting up a tent? Situation sorted at Tent-OK at Camping de Koolberg, where you can stay in spacious safari tents that are set up ready for guests to move into – no messing about with groundsheets and poles here… These tents make excellent options for those who are just dipping their toes into camping before buying all the kit, folk just stopping over for one night or people who can’t set up their own tent for whatever reason (perhaps you’re cycling or already have your hands full with the kids). The tents have been designed to mimic the vibe of traditional camping, so the setup is on the simpler side rather than being a fully equipped glamping experience. That means camp beds and bed linen are provided, but you’ll need to bring along your bedding. There’s also a kettle and coffee maker, but you’ll need to supply the bits to use them. Shared bathrooms are close by, with toilets and showers available. The ready tents are part of a larger Brabant camping site where you can meet other guests during the weekly communal meal; there’s also a vineyard on site where you can have a wander and book tasting sessions. Barbecues are permitted on site, and you can pick up supplies at the shops in Oploo (five minutes’ drive away).

There are lots of lovely walking and cycling routes around here, so bring your shoes and/or bikes along to make your way through Sint Anthonisbos (10 minutes’ drive), the Maasheggen nature reserve (15 minutes) and the Cujik area (20 minutes). There are bike routes directly outside the site too, or you can head over to the Maasduinen National Park (half an hour) to roam through diverse landscapes of heathland, forest and shifting sands. For more outdoor time, there are several fishing lakes nearby, or you can get up into the treetops at Avonturenpark De Bergen (15 minutes). Saint Oda Park (15 minutes) has a collection of outdoor artworks, or you can watch wild animals roaming at ZooParc Overloon (five minutes). To step back into the past, learn about 20th-century history at Overloon War Museum (10 minutes) or wander through the Old Town at Grave (25 minutes). If that’s not to your family’s taste, perhaps they’d prefer a bit of splashing about at Aqua Mundo Heiderbos (20 minutes) or taking to the rides at BillyBird Park Hemelrijk (25 minutes).
