Heaps of kid-pleasing activities and lots of essential kit to keep life easy for the grownups – it’s fair to say Vodatent at Camping 't Veld has things sorted for family breaks. Even the sprightliest of small sorts should find plenty to fill their hours here come fair weather or foul... sunny days can be spent on the sandy lake beach, paddling, fishing or crewing small boats (or stretched out with a book for less energetic sorts); in less clement times, retreat to the indoor pool, where there’s a kids’ pool, a water play area and a waterslide (competitive sorts, take note: it charts your time so you can race your pals). Scattered around the place is plenty of playground kit, much of it within keeping-watch distance of the tents; if the kids are keen to escape the parental eye for a while, leave them in the capable hands of site mascots Vic, Vos and Vinnie, who run a range of activities throughout the season. And if they’re really keen to run about under their own steam, this car-free site is a pretty decent place to do so. Staying in a safari tent means plenty of kit provided (including a natty mobile kitchen for indoor/outdoor cookery), and the site’s also got a restaurant, a small shop and a well-appointed heated toilet block with baby room.

Once you’ve warmed up on the play kit on site, set your sights on something rather bigger: the huge Slagharen theme park is a 15-minute drive away, with a roster of rollercoasters and rides for all ages, as well as a fab waterpark. Wild West wannabes will want to try out their cowboy skills at PonyparkCity, also 15 minutes away – take aim at the shooting range, pan for gems or ride a bucking bronco; small sorts who’d like to start acquiring horsemanship skills can take pony rides here too. If the clouds are gathering, the indoor playground, beach volleyball and bowling alley at Happy Fun Beach are a good bet. For something a little more leisurely, take a peek at the exotic residents of Lorkeershoeve bird park, 15 minutes away, or make your way to Wildlands Adventure Zoo half an hour away in Emmen.
