A myriad of cycling and walking options await throughout the Veluwe region, and you might also like to have a wander through heathland and sand dunes in De Hoge Veluwe National Park (45 minutes’ drive), keeping an eye out for rare mouflon sheep and herds of shy red deer. There are many options for fun-filled family days out. Kids usually adore the cheeky monkeys and silverback gorillas at the Apenheul (25 minutes), or watching walruses, sea lions and dolphins frolic at the Dolfinarium (half an hour). Completing a trio of animal-themed activities is Ermelo Sheepfold (20 minutes), where you can watch shepherds and their dogs round up the sheep and the kid can cuddle lambs in spring. If more high-octane outdoor action is required, take up the challenge on the high ropes at Klimbos Apeldoorn (25 minutes). Otherwise, you have many watersports opportunities on the Veluwemeer (20 minutes), where you can hire dinghies and motorboats to navigate the waterways, or try mastering windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking on the calm waters of the lake.
