What a well-located spot has the Veneto site of Agriturismo Alba: this Padua place is deep in the greenery of the Euganean Hills Regional Park and its 18,000 hectares snaked with hiking, biking and hacking trails for weeks’ worth of outdoor activities. Historyheads and arty sorts are well placed here too, as the site's within easy reach of walled towns and medieval villages such as Arquà Petrarca, Monselice and Este all within 10 minutes’ drive, and Padua 35 minutes away. The site is set around a renovated 18th-century farmhouse, with plenty of space to roam around the green grounds. Facilities include an outdoor pool, but as this is an agritourism site, you may well want to spend your time in the restaurant instead, for locally-sourced eats and Agriturismo Alba’s own wine. If you seek yet more souvenirs for your suitcase, the site also sells apricot or pear juice and preserve. Agriturismo Alba’s nearest town is Buone, five minutes’ drive away.

Pedal 300 metres from the site to reach the circular 64-kilometre cycle path around the Euganean Hills Regional Park for a scenic Veneto-plain bike ride past woodland and towns. Two lakes are just to the north of the site for waterside rides and wanders, or you could drive 15 minutes for peaceful picnics around Villa Barbarigo Garden. For a look at local history, the National Atestino Museum at Este (10 minutes’ drive) digs into pre-Roman and Roman art and artefacts found around the town; things are slightly more modern at the 16th-century palace Castello del Catajo, 15 minutes away. At Montagnana (30 minutes), the famed medieval walls are hailed as the best preserved in Europe. More history? Venture to Venice (50 minutes), which should keep you busy for quite some time (if you’re not a historyhead, go Venice shopping instead for Murano glass and Venice or Florence leather). It’s an hour and 20 minutes from your agritourism base to Verona, and around the same to Bologna to the south.
