The numerous attractions of Apulia's Gargano National Park are within easy reach when you stay at Camping Villaggio Internazionale, on the northern coast of the peninsula that's home to this splendid natural reserve. In the small village of San Menaio, within the dense Pineta Marzini forest (the forest location meaning shaded pitches – a feature not to be underestimated on hot summer days), the site is five minutes’ walk from a sandy beach lapped by the waters of the Adriatic Sea. Those shallow waters are very suited to families with young children, and the short, straightforward walk from the site means any lilos, canoes and paddleboards can be carried without too much difficulty. Dogs are welcome to sit next to your deckchair, too. Speaking of canine companions (or whatever pets you share your life with), they are also permitted at the site, which has a dog park and dedicated sunbeds for four-legged guests on the sun terrace next to the pool. Beach life will likely take up a fair chunk of your time while you’re here, but there’s plenty to keep you busy on site, too, with aquagym sessions, yoga classes and a fitness centre and a playground or face-painting sessions for the kids. There are also volleyball courts and ping-pong tables for family tournaments. The site's restaurant is a top spot in which to start your gastronomic journey into the local Apulia cuisine; there are also several eateries and pizzerias within a five-minute walk of the site.

With a large sandy beach sheltered by vegetation-covered cliffs on one side and a long harbour arm on the other, Peschici (20 minutes’ drive) has a pretty centre of narrow alleyways lined with whitewashed fishermen’s cottages and flowerpots full of colourful blooms. Climb up to the medieval hilltop castle for spectacular views of the coast. When you want a break from sea and sand, you can arrange an excursion to the Riserva Naturale della Foresta Umbra (35 minutes). Here, among the beech and oak trees, you might spot roe deer, weasels and woodpeckers, plus a remarkable variety of wild orchids. Spiaggia della Scialara in Vieste (40 minutes) is a beach famed for the Monolite Pizzomunno, a monumental freestanding limestone rock. The Museo Malacologico Vieste displays shells from all over the world, while the Scalinata dell’Amore, a staircase decorated with love hearts and the lyrics of a romantic Italian song, is a top spot for a selfie with your other half.
