Fancy spending a hol on horseback? Canter along to Scuderie del Peschio, a family-friendly site less than five minutes’ drive from the Molise village of San Giuliano del Sannio.
This park is an equestrian’s dream: on the grounds of a riding school, days will pass post-haste in a whickering flurry of riding lessons and – the mane event – hilly treks (organised by the site team) through an ancient Apennine oak forest full of rustling leaves, dormice scurrying by and owls hooting overhead.
Those who don’t feel all that at ease around four-legged beasts of burden can stick to more familiar modes of transport if they prefer: the park’s team can also arrange guided hikes and bike rental is on site for cycling devotees visiting this hilly region.
Nethers feeling a little numb from all that saddle time? There’s a nearby tennis court that guests can use and a public swimming pool 15 minutes away is well placed on warmer days. Otherwise, get a drink in the bar on site, tuck into a meal in the restaurant and soak up all that rural peace and quiet.
Alternatively, if a little Italian culture’s what you’re craving on the trip, you can lunch with the locals at traditional trattorias in San Giuliano del Sannio, set off towards the fourth-century ruins of the Area Archeologica di Terravecchia or browse the historical artefacts dug up from around Monsummano Terme at the Museo della Città e del Territorio (both 15 minutes’ drive from the site).

Campobasso, the biggest city in the region, is a 25-minute drive from the site for meanders towards the mountaintop Monforte Castle and roams around Romanesque churches. It also has a botanical garden, old town and palace to ply, as well as plenty of places for supping on an aperitif or two.
If you’d rather get out in nature, Matese Regional Park is 40 minutes away for tricky treks across limestone mountains, with wolves and golden eagles to spot along the way...
In the hotter months, hikes can also be had – or cable car rides for those whose legs don’t want stretching – in the Funivie Molise (45 minutes). This place is also a hub for skiing and snowboarding should you be in the area during the winter season.
