Tucked under a canopy of trees providing shade from the midsummer sun, Igal Thermal Camping is a peaceful and leafy base for simple camping breaks just five minutes’ stroll from the renowned Spa Igal in Somogy County. Once installed on site, you can use the facilities at the spa for free, which include a mineral-rich thermal pool, an outdoor pool complex, saunas and massage treatments. If you have kids with you, there’s a couple of waterslides and a bouncy castle to keep them happy as well.
Back on site, there’s a facilities block with separate showers, toilets and a rudimentary laundry room. Other handy amenities include a covered outdoor kitchen with a barbecue, washing-up sinks and basic gas-powered hobs.
Going down the self-catering route? There’s a small supermarket in the village (15 minutes’ walk) for stocking up on the basics. If you’re dodging the cooking, you can root out a handful of local restaurants serving specialities like paprika-spiced goulash with túrós csusza egg noodles.

Lake Deseda (25 minutes’ drive) is a pleasant spot for leisurely ambles or bike rides, fishing and wild swimming. Deseda Arboretum (half an hour) provides an introduction to local tree species, while you can hire bikes and boats to explore the lake from the Fekete István Látogatóközpont visitor centre (20 minutes).
Learn more about regional heritage on a visit to Szennai Skanzen (40 minutes), an open-air museum showcasing Somogy County’s thatched wooden farmhouses, barns full of vintage farm implements and a church with an intricately painted wooden ceiling. There’s a planetarium and observation tower with views over the forested countryside at Zselic Star Park (50 minutes); on clear nights you can watch stars dancing in the skies through a giant telescope.
If the kids are more up for cuddling animals, make a beeline for Bőszénfai Deer Farm (40 minutes), where they can walk with the deer and get up close to elk grazing in spacious enclosures. Katica Tanya activity park (45 minutes) may well be a sure-fire hit with younger offspring for its mega-slides, go-karting track and climbing wall.
