Where to start in Hamburg (half an hour away by car)? Well, it depends on your tastes… there are more than 50 museums and a swanky new concert hall for cultural types; boat tours, an excellent zoo and the Miniatur Wunderland model town for families; and stacks of street art and cool cafés for those with hipster tendencies. On top of that, the city’s markets and restaurants are stuffed with tempting things to eat. After all the excitement of the city, spend some time closer to base playing a round at Golf-Club Großensee (five minutes' drive), horse riding from Hoisdorf (10 minutes) or heading to the Lütjensee (10 minutes) for a high ropes course and more lake swims. If the nippers are demanding more activity, there’s a great indoor playground at Indoo Park (15 minutes) and a chance for them to scramble up the walls at Kletterwald Hamburg climbing park (20 minutes). To keep the outings ground-based, check out the machines at Schleswig-Holstein Motor Museum (five minutes) or take off to see the turrets of arty Ahrensburg Palace (15 minutes).
