Wherever you land up in the world, beach holidays are simply splendid. Riverside breaks, ditto. And if you're also within easy reach of a city such as spectacular Hamburg, you might feel you've been mighty lucky in your pick of holiday locale. So it is at Lower Saxony's Stover Strand Camping, a 12-hectare site directly on the banks of the vast River Elbe and a couple of kilometres from sandy lakeside beaches for swimming, watersports and fishing. It's also – get your chuffed face ready – only 35 minutes' drive from Germany's second biggest city Hamburg (prep your sightseeing persona too; you'll want to spend several days here). Stover Strand has spacious pitches overlooking the water within steps of the beach, and leisure facilities including a playground, miniature golf and a sports court. There's a well-stocked shop for your foodie bits and bobs, a snack bar and two restaurants with heated terraces and home-cooked meals including an a la carte menu, regional specialities and regular foodie events including barbecue buffets and dinners on the beach. The staff can also put together a personal picnic basket or arrange a barbecue party for you; just ask when you arrive.

喜欢: Die Lage ist sehr schön

不喜欢: Stellplatz für Wohnmobile und Zeltplatz ist nicht getrennt. Duschen teilweise sehr weit entfernt vom Stellplatz nur 2 Toiletten alles kostet extra. Toilettenreinigung 2€, Duschen 1€, 4 Minuten, Strom 0,80 Cent pro KW und Basispreis 30€ pro Nacht inkl. 2 Personen und Camper auf ca. knapp 50 qm.

喜欢: The close proximity to the beach area. Decent toilet block ablutions

不喜欢: No toilet waste disposal point within suitable walking distance of the location we were given to pitch up. No water waste disposal point within suitable walking distance of where we were pitched. The majority of water points were taken up by hoses belonging to other campers. The showers are too expensive (considering the cost already paid for staying), and again not within suitable walking distance. No hot water at the washing up facility's. Tumble dryers didn't dry the clothes yet was happy to take plenty of the coins. We basically paid a fortune to park our caravan close to the water edge with electric.

喜欢: Location close to the river and the motorway. Good for an overnight stay. Clean.

不喜欢: Extremely crowded. Expensive. Showers are really far and work with little coins that only give you 3 minutes. No assigned camping pitches. Had to pay extra to park the car next to the tent. Very fussy about having only one tent per pitch (even small ones). There was glass on the beach.

喜欢: Liked the possibility to walk the dog on top of the dike and the fact that it's next to the river. Okay for an overnight stay.

不喜欢: It is such a massive campsite - caravans as far as the eye can see and very cramped. They are very fussy about charging extra per tent or for bringing your car to the pitch. No assigned pitches just: "go and find one in this area". Not enough showers, we ended up being a full 5 minute walk from a building with showers. Really expensive for a campsite.

Swimming, watersports, fishing and cycling along the riverbanks are all popular picks nearby, as is pottering about the small towns and traditional villages of the region. The holiday park was named as a bike-friendly site by the General German Cycling Club (ADFC): hire your wheels on site to venture forth and explore. Over 20 varieties of fish live in the River Elbe for fisherfolk to land – eel, perch, pike, bream, gudgeon, silver bream, zander and burbot all have their home here. Buy a fishing permit on site if you fancy trying your angling luck; you can buy fishing kit too if you need it, and the staff will freeze your catch for you if needed (or you can fry it up fresh at one of the barbecue areas on the banks of the river). Brush up on your local history and culture at the East Prussia Regional Museum (half an hour's drive away), full of artistic pieces, multimedia displays and kid-friendly interactive exhibits that tell the story of the area. And then – time for at least a couple of days in spectacular Hamburg, connected to the North Sea by the Elbe. This lively place is crisscrossed by hundreds of canals with vibrant green areas, shops and restaurants: also make time for a visit to the famed fish market and a stroll around the biggest harbour in Germany.
