There are two particularly fab facts about the fab French park of Domaine de la Bergerie. (Well, significantly more than that, but the absolute top ones of an absolutely tiptop list.) First up, it's in a setting so stunning that the proud owners claim it's the best in all of southern France: in the Provence, among 60 hectares of spectacular scenery, and 10 minutes' drive from both the medieval village of Roquebrune-sur-Argens and the golden beaches of the sunny Côte d'Azur. And secondly? The friendly lot here maintain that kids are their top priority, so lay on a packed (truly packed) activities and entertainment programme for ages 18 months to 18 years with paintballing, miniature golf, archery, pony riding, drum workshops, visits to the site's mini farm, hours in the Splashpad outdoor paddling and games pool... If you like to let your offspring off the leash while on hol, this is the place to do it. While the smalls are otherwise occupied, grownups can sink into an equally vast array of options including yoga and massage, healthy cooking workshops or a lengthy session in the wellness centre among the indoor heated pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and Oriental steam room. There's also a huge, swish waterpark outdoors, with top-notch views of the surrounding Var hills, and a fitness centre and a games room if you care to move slightly after your bathe or bask. Even the restaurant is pretty special here, with a main room around a cosy fireplace, and a high season terrace in the shade of centuries-old mulberry trees. Takeaway dishes and pizzas are also available; there are two snack bars (one by the pool), and you can snaffle crepes and waffles at the summer creperie.

Get out into the Var and around the coast from this setting between the Provence and the Mediterranean: tackle or snap pics of the Verdon gorges, ramble around Provençal villages among hills, vineyards and olive trees, pick up produce at the regional markets, or follow the local wine routes and coastal path. The closest Côte d’Azur beach is Les Issambres, 10 kilometres away, where there's a sailing centre and boat rentals. If you crave a trek further afield, the Bateaux Verts ferry sails along the coast to Saint Tropez. The site's also within easy reach of famed Fréjus, within 15 minutes' drive, and day trips to Cannes, 40 minutes west.
