If that sounds like a hol especially tailored to you, book in at Camping Lou Gourdan, around half an hour’s drive from the edges of peak-covered Mercantour National Park, the towering Verdon Gorge and the forested hills of the Préalpes d'Azur… This site’s a hotspot for hiking in lush scenery without going too far at all – it also sits right on the Var river around a 10-minute drive from the Cians gorge, with mesmerising views of hills from its grounds. If the picnic basket needs filling for trips out canyoning, rafting, canoeing and climbing in the local area, shops selling French fare are in the pretty village of Puget-Théniers, 10 minutes’ walk away; buses and trains – including the traditional Pignes steam train with scenic views – also leave from here to the Côte d'Azur city of Nice (with journeys taking about an hour and a half). Staying on site for a while instead? Rest up in between adventures in the bright and spacious communal lounge with its free wifi and board games. A sports complex with a sauna, weight and fitness room, plus squash and tennis courts, is nearby as well if you’re not too tired after trekking… The toilet and shower facilities (with mixer taps rather than push buttons) at Camping Lou Gourdan are also modern and well maintained.

Suite panne de voiture avant notre arrivée, nous avons annulé notre séjour par obligation
Malgré nos demandes pour cas de force majeure, aucun remboursement même partiel, leurs arguments : ce n'est pas moi c'est Pitchup hors qu'il ont encaissé le reglément, et aucun esprit commercial, il faut faire de l'argent
Nous n'avions pas pris l'assurance annulation car on ne pouvait pas prévoir cette panne, par expérience d'autres campings et gites pour des faits bien moins importants ont acté le remboursement, je déconseille donc ce camping à tous

喜欢 Very friendly receptionist with lots of suggestions for local activities. We went for a great bike ride up through the gorges to La Criox sur Roudoule. Peaceful site with useful water source next to each plot. Lovely location next to river. The traffic from the road was not audible over the sound of river, typically. Lovely small town to explore. Very clean facilities.

不喜欢 Personally I didn't like the mixed facilities. Would prefer separate female-male facilities.

喜欢 Small but well proportioned site with nice pitches, each having their own water and electricity. The amenities block is wonderful, like a 5 star hotel, immaculate always. The reception you receive on arrival is also outstanding as it is throughout the stay. Knowledge and guidance about the surrounding area enhances your stay even more. Prices are very reasonable within the cafe/bar as is the food that is offered.

You might need to book several weeks off work to maximise your time in this activity-packed area: there are many mountain biking trails to take – ask on site for recommendations – as well as cool canyons including Riolan, AIglun and the Saint-Auban (all less than 50 minutes’ drive away) for fishing and dips in clear waters. Enroute, explore mountain towns for a look at alpine life: Entrevaux, under 10 minutes’ drive away, has a medieval fortress and houses spilling down a hilltop while Annot (just over 20 minutes) is a pretty place with a backdrop of unusually shaped sandstone boulders. For driving trips a touch further on, get in the car and head towards Mercantour National Park through Clans for the Col de la Bonette – the highest paved road in Europe – or take another route via Cians to see the red-rock gorge. Southwards takes you away from the mountains and down to the coast, with the popular city of Nice being an hour and 10 minutes’ drive.
