Sitting on a lakeside terrace with a glass of wine, enjoying the peace and watching the wildlife… now, doesn't that sound like a lovely way to spend your holiday? Well, it’s one of the ways to while away time at Camping Au Lac d’Hautibus, a laidback site on the banks of Lake Hautibus in the Deux-Sèvres countryside. The lakeside bar may well be a highlight for many guests, with cool drinks and ice creams to enjoy as well as the views. Being right by the lake also means guests can take to the water for fishing or canoe trips. You can paddle in the cool water from the nearby lake beach, but for swimming you'll want to turn instead to the local pool, just outside the campsite gates. It's open in high season, with a heated outdoor pool, water jets, slides and deckchairs. And that's not all that's on hand to keep little minds busy – there’s also a play area, a pétanque court and a badminton area. In high season, the site team run a busy programme of kids’ activities (craft workshops, treasure hunts, sports tournaments and the like) along with evening entertainments like karaoke and live music evenings. For food, there's a small shop on site and gas barbecues can be hired by the day or week. Being located on the edge of the village of Argentonnay also means there are several shops and places to eat within a short walk.

Life on site is pretty laidback, so you may like to keep your outings low key as well, maybe exploring the medieval stronghold of Château de Sanzay or meeting the cute residents of Argentonnay Alpaca Farm (both five minutes' drive), or taking a gentle stroll around the Japanese-style gardens at Parc Oriental de Maulévrier (20 minutes). The again, this is your holiday, and if you've got the whole family along you might like to treat everyone to a trip to one of the nearby big-hitting attractions – perhaps the spectacular themed areas and shows of Puy du Fou (45 minutes) or the futuristic thrills of Futuroscope (an hour and 20 minutes). Somewhere between the two extremes are local days out including racing around Circuit de Karting du Val d’Argenton (five minutes), rides and shows at Parc de la Vallée (15 minutes) and animal encounters at Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (half an hour).
