The owners of Camping La Forêt de Tessé in Charente picked a prime spot to settle in when they crossed from the UK over to south-west France: this is one of the sunniest regions in the land, and it's a cinch from here to get to top destinations around the south of France and on to Spain and Portugal. Ildi and Mark left the UK to set up their own site in France, using the expert knowledge gleaned from many trips away in their motorhome. They picked the peaceful French hamlet of Grosbout as their spot – and jolly sensible too as you'll agree when you spy this rural setting… Old villages and châteaux are dotted around the region, easily reached by foot or bike around the country lanes, and it's all fably safe; the only traffic you'll see is the occasional car or tractor passing by. But. Although this is a serenely rural area, it's within easy reach of pretty much everything you'll need on your French vacance. Supermarkets, food markets, bars, restaurants and shops are all within 10 minutes' drive, as is the N10 main road; the A10 autoroute is half an hour away. (And for les enfants and/or the teens? Futuroscope is an hour away and the city of Angoulême, home to the world-famed Angoulême International Comics Festival, is within 45 minutes.) The guest area of Camping La Forêt de Tessé is next to Ildi and Mark's house, on a level grass field with plentiful trees for shade and with picnic tables for alfresco eats all day. Guests have access to an outdoor pool, sun loungers and parasols for days on site, as well as a pétanque court at which to feel fully French. Camping La Forêt de Tessé has a food shop, and barbecues are allowed.

喜欢: Host was very helpful on arrival, English. Able to supply us with milk for a much needed cup of tea on arrival. Showers and toilets immaculate with hot water. Lovely area for pitch up with benches all around to sit at. Breakfast bread/croissants offered, however, offer not taken as an early start to head down into Spain. Easy access from the N10 from both directions. Highly recommend if passing that way. Thanks.

喜欢: Owner was very hospitable, couldn’t have done more! Morning bread deliveries and clean facilities. Flat grass pitches. Beautiful village location.

喜欢: Small quiet site with pool. Friendly welcome from Mark who explained where to pitch and hook up. Ordered bread and pastries for the next morning - promptly delivered at 8.30 am - what service! Free roaming chickens and a friendly dog from the neighbours added to the rural charm of this site. Fantastic shower and toilet facilities - clean and several to choose from - including a large disabled cubicle with sink, loo and shower.

不喜欢: Little privacy - we were pitched in the middle of the open site. But other pitches around the perimeter of site looked good.

Flip through the Welcome folder on site for info on local events as well as suggestions on what to see and do: there's rather a lot. Top suggestions include the canoeing, summer swimming and kids' beach at Réjallant Ruffec, 15 minutes' drive away; the abbey and Arboretum of Nanteuil-en-Vallée, one of France's 'small towns of character' (20 minutes), or monkeying around at La Vallee des Singes, 35 minutes away. For something a tad different, canoe right down the river to Château de Verteuil, an 11th-century castle overlooking the Charente valley; it's 20 minutes away if you'd rather get there by car. Further afield, Cognac, Chauvigny and the marshlands of the Marais Poitevin are all about an hour and quarter away, and La Rochelle an hour and 40 minutes.
