Hire a canoe and get onto the river right from the Charente region's Camping des Ribières – and if you fancy fishing, that's on offer straight from this peaceful site too. Canoe trips can be started as well from des Ribières's local town of Confolens, where there's also a public pool, horse riding centre and tennis courts. The town's in the triangle between Poitiers, Angoulême and Limoges for further exploring; for family days, an animal park and an adventure park are both within 15 kilometres. Camping des Ribières is a spacious and quiet site, in a wildlife haven and walkers' paradise on the banks of the Vienne. It has free wifi throughout, a playground and a pétanque court for leisure, and a drying room, launderette and washrooms with toilets, showers and accessible facilities covering the amenities. The small shop on site sells crafts and drinks. In summer, there's also a snack bar selling pizza, burgers, ice cream and other food.

You may need two hookup cables as electric power is far from some pitches. Free kayaking from site.

喜欢 The site was very convenient to the local village and its amenities. Very clean tidy and everything you need on site for a long term visit or a 1 night stay. The snack bar food, especially the pizzas were amazing.

But most important, Virgine and Joseph are absolutely amazing hosts, friendly, helpful and beautiful people.

As well as the fishing and canoeing straight from the site, you can find swimming, horse riding, tennis and more canoeing within a kilometre at Confolens. After all that, stick around in town to access a trip along the former railway line between Confolens and Roumazières, or – much recommended – taking your own velorail along the old railway track via rivers, forest, grassland and viaducts. If you're around in August, Confolens is the annual host of the International Folklore Festival, which sees hundreds of performers turn up to tell their tales. By car, La Colline Enchantée animal park 10 kilometres away and the Lacs de Haute Charente adventure park (15 kilometres) should see approval from the kids; within about an hour are the cartoonish attractions of painted walls, comics festival and Museum of Cartoons at Charente capital Angoulême. Châteaux are simple to get to from here too: try Château de St Germain (five kilometres), Château de Rochebrune (15 kilometres) and Château de Peyras (also 15 kilometres).
