Do you enjoy a drop of Cognac as an after-dinner drink? Then consider a holiday in the birthplace of the stuff: the Charente department of western France, where you might be able to visit big-name and artisanal distilleries and stock up on your favourite tipple. Camping de Bourg-Charente, on the western edge of the village of the same name, is a top place to stay, with heaps of facilities to keep everybody in your family happy – from the kids to the dog.
The site, in a leafy setting that promotes peaceful, relaxing vibes, stretches along the tranquil Charente river. Cue angling for trout and pike, canoeing or maybe indulging in a spot of wild swimming. Those who prefer terra firma might enjoy a riverside stroll or a game of tennis at the nearby courts, or they may hire a bike on site to explore the local area. It’s a 10 minutes’ bike ride to the Dolmen de Garde Èpée, for example; and 15 minutes to Jarnac, home of the renowned Courvoisier cognac house.
Back on site after a day exploring (and sampling Cognac…), let the kids spend the last of their energy in the play area or on the pétanque court while you prepare a barbecue dinner. The site has a food shop selling local produce and booze; otherwise, the nearest supermarkets are in Cognac or Jarnac (both 10 minutes’ drive). But a better idea than cooking is tasting the artisanal wood-fired pizzas made at the on-site pizzeria, before joining other guests at the organised evening entertainment sessions.
