  • Peaceful site by the river Charente, a 10-minute drive from Cognac
  • Jarnac 10 minutes’ drive; Angoulême 35 minutes
  • Play area and pizzeria on site; river access for fishing and swimming
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys sampling local drinks while on holiday, you’ll most likely be pleased with the offerings in the Charente region. This is, after all, the birthplace of Cognac, and it has plenty of big-name and artisanal distilleries where you can try different drops and stock up on the area’s favourite tipple. About 10 minutes’ drive from the town of Cognac is Camping de Bourg-Charente, on the western edge of the village of the same name and a top place to stay, with plenty of facilities to keep the whole family happy (kids and dogs included). This site is in a leafy setting on the banks of the Charente river, so it’s a peaceful spot where guests can fish for trout and pike, launch canoes or wade in for a bit of wild swimming. Those who prefer to stick to dry land might enjoy a riverside stroll or a game of tennis at the nearby courts, or perhaps hiring a bike on site to explore the local area. It’s a 10-minute bike ride to the Dolmen de Garde Èpée, for example, or 15 minutes to Jarnac, home of the renowned Courvoisier Cognac house. Back on site after a day exploring (and possibly sampling the Cognac…), let the kids spend the last of their energy in the play area or on the pétanque court while you prep a barbecue dinner. The site has a food shop selling local produce and drinks; otherwise, the nearest supermarkets are in Cognac or Jarnac (both 10 minutes’ drive). Not in the mood to cook? Pick up artisanal wood-fired pizzas at the on-site pizzeria, before joining other guests at the organised evening entertainment sessions.

Local attractions

The local towns have plenty of interest for visitors. Over in Cognac (10 minutes’ drive) you can visit the château and learn about the town’s famed drink at Musée des savoir-faire du cognac before touring some of the distilleries – Martell, Hennessy and Remy Martin all have their bases here. Heading in the other direction, Jarnac (10 minutes) is home to Courvoisier and the Maison Natale de François Mitterrand. A little further away but worth the visit is Angoulême (35 minutes), where you can stroll along the ramparts, visit the cathedral and look out for street art before exploring the Musée de la Bande Dessinée comics museum. Add a bit more heritage to the mix with outings to the 12th-century Abbaye de Châtres (five minutes) and the grand Château de Jonzac (35 minutes), which has hosted all sorts of famous figures from Louis XIV to Charles de Gaulle.
