Aimed at families and couples looking for a quiet and laidback holiday but with plenty of services and entertainment in high season, Camping du Lac de Bignac really does have the best of both worlds... Set over nine hectares and with a spectacular four-hectare lake, this site’s most definitely a sizeable and scenic place for Charente countryside stays. As well as longer breaks in the second-sunniest part of France, this park in the Poitou-Charentes (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) region to the country’s west is also well placed for stopovers to Spain or Portugal. It has easy access to the A10 and the toll-free N10 to get to and from ports as well as regional highlights like Angoulême, half an hour’s drive to the south, and Cognac, 45 minutes west. When you’re not perusing the paper museum and Saint-Pierre cathedral in the former town or sipping on the famed alcohol in the latter, plenty of entertainment’s on hand at the site. Sporty sorts might like to get active in the big pool or on the tennis, badminton and pétanque courts, while angling aficionados can get busy fishing on the lake. If you didn’t catch a creature for supper, the popular restaurant at the park might lure you in… Breakfast’s just as easily organised as dinner thanks to the daily bread and pastries delivery, plus a supermarket is just outside the local commune of Bignac about 300 metres away.

喜欢: Friendly welcome, given choice of pitch. Lots of free pitches.

不喜欢: Cleaner in toilets at 0830. Good to keep on top of it, awkward when using loo 😂 maybe background music would help. Slept with eat plugs and slept well, wildlife very noisy so glad I did

喜欢: Beautiful campsite with friendly and helpful owners. The pool was ace and we used it every day.

不喜欢: No dislikes, but a suggestion: some hand soap dispensers would be great at the toilet block.

喜欢: A peaceful, friendly and safe campsite for us to spend a few nights on our way to Spain from UK. The swimming pool was fantastic and clean, the lake was tranquil and the setting was so lovely surrounded by fields and trees. Close to small towns for amenities and there was a small shop for basics on site. Would definitely recommend.

喜欢: It was a lovely site with really lovely owners/staff, they were so friendly. We had the choice of pitch as sadly for the owners there weren't many people staying. The pitch was huge, on grass, plenty of shade if you wanted it. There is a big lake and you can fish there, also a good pool. The toilet block was good, very clean. We ate at the restaurant, it was good to have cod, steak etc on the menu rather than just burgers (there were burgers if you wanted!) It was lovely sitting on the decking overlooking the lake enjoying dinner and a nice bottle of rose!!

Just like the rest of France, Charente’s no stranger to a château – and the handsome one at Gourville is just 10 minutes’ drive from this park. An even grander castle’s at La Rochefoucauld (35 minutes away), with a staircase said to be designed by Leonardo da Vinci. See more stately buildings at Jarnac (30 minutes), including a museum housed in a former wine storehouse and the Courvoisier centre dedicated to the history and production of Cognac, or head 45 minutes away from the park to the city of Cognac itself for yet another château and pretty public gardens. Into historical distilleries? Tours can be taken here at the grand riverside complexes of Hennessy and Remy Martin. If you’re thinking of scheduling in swimming and boating off the lakeside beaches of Saint-Yrieix lake (15 minutes’ drive), it might be best to do these before a tasting – especially if you’re planning on cycling here on a bike hired and delivered to the park…
