Aimed at families and couples looking for a quiet and laidback holiday but with plenty of services and entertainment in high season, Camping du Lac de Bignac really does have the best of both worlds... Set over nine hectares and with a spectacular four-hectare lake, this site’s most definitely a sizeable and scenic place for Charente countryside stays. As well as longer breaks in the second-sunniest part of France, this park in the Poitou-Charentes (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) region to the country’s west is also well placed for stopovers to Spain or Portugal. It has easy access to the A10 and the toll-free N10 to get to and from ports as well as regional highlights like Angoulême, half an hour’s drive to the south, and Cognac, 45 minutes west. When you’re not perusing the paper museum and Saint-Pierre cathedral in the former town or sipping on the famed alcohol in the latter, plenty of entertainment’s on hand at the site. Sporty sorts might like to get active in the big pool or on the tennis, badminton and pétanque courts, while angling aficionados can get busy fishing on the lake. If you didn’t catch a creature for supper, the popular restaurant at the park might lure you in… Breakfast’s just as easily organised as dinner thanks to the daily bread and pastries delivery, plus a supermarket is just outside the local commune of Bignac about 300 metres away.

喜欢 Lovely peaceful site with spacious shady and non shady pitches, lovely lake, and very friendly owners. Had great steak in the restaurant. Free WiFi, but signal only strong by reception. A bit off the beaten track, but worth it.

喜欢 Big site with plenty of pitches to choose from. Some are shaded which is ideal in hot sunny weather.
Nice clean pool, small restaurant on site also.
Owners are really nice and friendly.

喜欢 Beautiful lakeside venue. It’s a really pretty site, excellent facilities (still getting used to button showers but these were ok and hot). Managers were so helpful and polite and English speaking too!
Actually, I don’t want to say any more in case you find it and I can’t get in.

喜欢 Beau camping arboré au bord d'un lac, au calme. Les emplacements sont grands et plats. sanitaires sont propres et fonctionnels, l'accueil très sympathique. Je recommande ce camping.

喜欢 Beautiful lake, lovely village and remote location. Peaceful tranquil campsite. Fairly good facilities

不喜欢 Not much in the surrounding area for supplies, just a little shop at the campsite which was handy. We were there out of season so no restaurant open. Showers could be a little cleaner!

Just like the rest of France, Charente’s no stranger to a château – and the handsome one at Gourville is just 10 minutes’ drive from this park. An even grander castle’s at La Rochefoucauld (35 minutes away), with a staircase said to be designed by Leonardo da Vinci. See more stately buildings at Jarnac (30 minutes), including a museum housed in a former wine storehouse and the Courvoisier centre dedicated to the history and production of Cognac, or head 45 minutes away from the park to the city of Cognac itself for yet another château and pretty public gardens. Into historical distilleries? Tours can be taken here at the grand riverside complexes of Hennessy and Remy Martin. If you’re thinking of scheduling in swimming and boating off the lakeside beaches of Saint-Yrieix lake (15 minutes’ drive), it might be best to do these before a tasting – especially if you’re planning on cycling here on a bike hired and delivered to the park…
