If you're plotting a trip to La Rochelle but want to be in quiet French countryside close to a beach and outdoor activities to keep you busy for days... have a look at peaceful and family-friendly Camping L'Abri-Côtier, in the Charente-Maritime department about 45 minutes' drive from the famed coastal city. Tickets for major attractions are sold in reception, so you can sort your entry to the likes of La Rochelle Aquarium, La Palmyre Zoo and cruises around Fort Boyard before you step off site. Closer to home, the sandy beach, fishing village and oyster museum of Port-des-Barques are all within a couple of kilometres, close to the seawater pool for swimming at all hours regardless of tide times at the beach of Anses. Canoeing, fishing, cycling and tennis are all easy to access nearby. Among the modern facilities on site are a free and heated indoor pool, a terrace with sun loungers, wifi, a TV room, a play area, and a bar and pizzeria serving hot meals, snacks and cold drinks. Entertainment such as concerts and karaoke, shows and dances are organised in the evenings during high season. The Camping L'Abri-Côtier shower and toilet blocks are suitable for disabled guests.

喜欢 Big, shady pitch and lovely pool area. Very friendly and helpful staff. Nice freshly cooked pizzas and fresh bread available. Showers were nice and hot and clean. Toilets were clean. Kids loved the disco!

喜欢 Friendly campsite which does (almost) everything well. There’s a good bar and small shop, both open in mornings and evenings, with great pizzas - and they have fresh bread 7 days a week too.
Nice balance of a lively restaurant but dead quiet by 11pm
The kids loved the swimming pool.
The facilities are generally good and everything is clean.
The location is lovely- shops, sea and sunsets a short drive away.

不喜欢 There wasn’t quite enough for my teenagers to do. They suggested more ‘space’ for them - more outdoor seating in the top corner perhaps?...
The pitches are quite small and the neighbours are pretty close.
There is no soap in the toilet blocks.. which I always find a bit grim 😬

喜欢 The site has a nice feel and the swimming pool is well maintained and we got a sun bed on the couple of times we went for an hour or two. The staff are very friendly and helpful, the bar was nice. We did not eat in the restaurant or participate in evening entertainment but it all looked very good.

不喜欢 Whilst the shower and toilet facilities were clean, they are very dated and could do with modernisation. Also lack of soap in the public areas so you had to bring your own after going to toilet. Saying all that we would come back again.

The nearest beach from Camping L'Abri-Côtier is Port-des-Barques, part of an old fishing village which has handsome 20th-century villas atop its cliffs, a sailing school, a museum covering the history of the region and its oyster farming past, and comely carrelets, the small fishing huts perched on stilts over the sea. Around the peninsula, stop off at Soubise, with its castle and 17th-century church, and Saint-Nazaire-sur-Charente, for views of Fort Lupin from the Lupin Fountain. Madame Island, the smallest island in the Charente-Maritime and a top spot for cycling, hiking and shellfish gathering, is accessible from Port-des-Barques via the stone path uncovered at low tide. More popular options in the area are the city of La Rochelle and its aquarium, one of the largest in Europe and a great option for a family trip; cruises around Fort Boyard and the Île-d'Aix, the beaches and seaside resort of Royan and popular La Palmyre Zoo. Other attractions include the Marais De Moëze Nature Reserve and the Royal Citadel of Brouage, built in 1555.
