Set deep in the countryside of the Marais Poitevin, Le Marais Sauvage is a family-friendly campsite just south of the small village of Le Mazeau. The surrounding landscape is mostly made up of grassy marshlands, peaceful forests and pretty canals that are great for boating – so much so that the local area is sometimes known as 'La Venise Verte' (Green Venice). Guests spending the night here have access to well-maintained and spacious pitches, all of which are a short walk from the site's handy facilities. As well as essentials like toilets and showers, the site has a bar serving light refreshments every month except for April and October (note that during low season, catering is closed on Sundays). There are also laundry facilities, a service point for motorhomes, a small shop and a play area for the kids. Handily, well-behaved dogs are welcome, so the full family can be in attendance. The centre of Le Mazeau is a short stroll away, where there is a restaurant and a bakery where you can pick up fresh bread and tasty pastries in the morning. Slightly further afield, the larger town of Niort (half an hour's drive) has a definite charm with its old buildings and pedestrian shopping streets, while day trips to the coast can be easily arranged as well – it's just under an hour to La Rochelle.

喜欢 This is our second time here. We stopped for 2 nights last summer and came back for 5 this year. It is a beautiful campsite in a lovely location. Pitches are spacious and wash block was extremely clean. The owners were incredibly friendly and helpful. We will certainly be back.

喜欢 Site clean and tidy, very tranquil and rural. Run by a lovely couple who could not be more helpful. Lovely galettes and crepes prepared freshly on site. Great walking/cycling from the campsite.

We were welcomed by our lovely hosts who showed us around and took our order for breakfast.

Although the weather was really bad, we felt welcomed and at home.

We enjoyed going for a couple of nice walks and we visited La Rochelle, which was really lovely.

With 112,000 hectares of canals and nature to explore, the surrounding Marais Poitevin regional natural park is a great place for boating, canoeing, kayaking or stand up paddleboarding. Fishing, cycling, walking and other leisure activities to help you feel at one with nature are also readily available in the immediate vicinity – for recommendations, head to the nearest tourist office in the pretty riverside town of Coulon (15 minutes' drive), which is also a good place to start boat trips. Elsewhere, the pretty ruins of the Abbaye Saint-Pierre de Maillezais (15 minutes) is worth a visit for anyone interested in the local area's Catholic and Huguenot heritage. For more inspiring buildings, you’d do well to check out the Renaissance château at Coulonges-sur-l'Autize too (25 minutes). If you don't mind a longer drive, it's well worth driving down to the beaches of La Rochelle or Noirmoutier island, both of which can be reached in just under an hour. If you're travelling with kids and want to keep them on their best behaviour, the prospect of a trip to the fab rides and live action shows at the Puy du Fou theme park (an hour and 15 minutes) is likely to do the trick.
