A surefire recipe for successful stays, this site with a games room and playground for the sprogs also has table tennis, table football, board games and pétanque to get stuck into. Miniature golf and outdoor sports facilities are mere minutes away on foot and it’s around 600 metres from an indoor and outdoor swimming pool complex that's open all year round for folk who feel it’s not really a hol without a place to drench themselves in water…
More of a cultural type than a sporty sort? A bit further out are the town’s Basilica of Notre-Dame de l'Épine (five minutes’ drive), a must-visit for its displays of Aubusson tapestries and 19th-century wall paintings, and Le Gué de Selle lake is 10 minutes away for laidback lounging besides water.
Towels are for hire from the site – most handy for drying off after a swim – and sheets are also available to help you lighten your load while packing. For other practicalities, supermarkets are less than a 10-minute walk away from this park in Mayenne.

A hotspot for history, the medieval Château de Sainte-Suzanne (15 minutes’ drive) invites visitors to rove the ramparts and learn about how it successfully resisted William the Conqueror. As well as the usual guided and audio tours, the castle also has an extensive events programme of concerts and activities for the kiddos.
Go further back in time at the Des Erves dolmen megalithic site, the Mayenne area’s oldest listed monument, and admire the architectural remnants of a Gallo-Roman city at Jublains’ archaeological museum (both around 15 minutes) while you’re at it.
Back in the present day, there’s horse riding, climbing and biking in the Tyrolean forest (half an hour’s drive), while other outdoorsy options include the watersports, pony rides, miniature golf and small trains at Sillé-le-Guillaume (25 minutes).
Urban expeditions will take you to towns such as Le Mans (an hour) – while in this swish settlement bound over to the Bugatti circuit to see the renowned racetrack for yourself and to cast eyes upon the cracking cathedral in the town centre.
