Looking for a family-friendly sojourn on the Loire-Atlantique’s Jade Coast? Your search might be over when you chance upon Camping de la Riviera, set in verdant grounds roughly 20 minutes’ walk from Grande Plage de Tharon in the elegant seaside resort of Saint-Michel-Chef-Chef. This lively spot has got plenty happening for all ages – it's likely you’ll never have a dull moment here.
Keep the offspring busy at the heated indoor/outdoor aquatic complex with waterslides and a paddling pool, and during peak season (July and August) there’s a daily club for kids aged between four and 10 years old, as well as organised entertainment throughout the day for all the family: sports tournaments, fitness classes, water activities, bingo, karaoke, and musical shows are all on the agenda.
You also have use of a playground, billiards and table football, a pétanque court and a multisports field for playing your favourite games – and if you want to be off exploring the region, you can hire bikes on site too.
There’s a large TV screen at the licensed snack bar, which has a good line in pizzas and burgers as well as a takeaway service if you’d rather eat back at your accommodation. You can stay on top of the laundry thanks to the washing machine and dryer, while bits and bobs like cots, barbecues and fridges can also be rented on site – meaning you can pack light too.

First stop a Jade Coast beach? Grande Plage de Tharon (20 minutes’ walk) is a popular spot with bars and cafés backing the sand; it’s also known for its colourful beach huts and ‘carrelets’ – wooden fishing huts on stilts. Saint-Brévin-les-Pins also has several golden-sand beaches, and there are lots of little coves around Pornic (both 10 minutes’ drive) for rockpooling and safe swimming.
It’s also worth having a stroll around Pornic’s pretty fishing harbour and marina, browsing its artisan shops and maybe treating yourselves to fresh seafood in a waterfront bistro. Surrounded by medieval ramparts, historic Guérande (half an hour) has half-timbered townhouses and a lively Wednesday and Saturday market, which sells seasonal produce and the salt produced in pans around the town.
The Brière Regional Natural Park (20 minutes) is one of the largest marshland areas in France, a region of water, reeds and islands that you can explore on traditional flat-bottomed punts; there are birdwatching hides and hiking trails that lead past ancient dolmens and thatched farmhouses too.
