Planning a family holiday? There’s plenty nearby to keep the kids occupied: within around an hour’s drive, there are two tropical animal parks, a treetop adventure park, the Océarium aquarium at Le Croisic, Planète Sauvage animal park and La Boissière du Doré zoo, plus beaches at La Baule, Pornichet and Saint-Brevin-les-Pins. There’s lots for grownups too, with Redon’s St Sauveur Abbey and Musee de la Batellerie de L’Ouest within 25 minutes, and Nantes a 50-minute drive from site. Make tracks for Nantes to poke around the Château des Ducs de Bretagne and the highly-recommended Jardin des Plantes de Nantes, and for high-end shopping at Passage Pommeraye; you should also take a trek to the must-see Machines of the Isles of Nantes. Turning towards the coast, visit Guérande to crawl along the ramparts, wander into the salt marshes and visit the doll museum, or head to Saint Nazaire to explore the Submarine L’Espadon, the Escal’Atlantic historic ocean liner experience and the scenic boardwalk. Get out in nature with a day (or two, or three) navigating Brière Regional Natural Park, less than an hour from the site.
