Settle down by the Célé river in the lovely lovely Lot at Camping Le Moulin Vieux, for a spot of French fishing, swimming or canoeing right from a riverbank site – or hiking the local stretch of the river's136-kilometre meander to the caves and mountain views rising up around.
Set near the Occitanie town of Brengues, Le Moulin Vieux is a big park with modern facilities, welcoming families as well as groups. It's set up to tend to all tastes, with an outdoor pool and paddling pool, a football and volleyball pitch, ping pong tables, a pétanque court, and evening entertainment ranging from gigs (professional) to karaoke (maybe less so) in high season.
And then – settling down for some bites, sups and surfing…? Le Moulin Vieux's brasserie, dishing up food made where possible from locally sourced ingredients, also comes with a terrace with wifi, and the bar has a good range of Belgian beers to work one's determined way through. Bread and pastries are available throughout the season at the site shop.
Le Moulin Vieux also has a TV room for lounging on lazy indoor days, and a laundry room, toilets and showers to take care of the essentials.

The Célé river winds through much of the varied landscape of the oh-so-excellent Lot department, so investigating as much of the river as poss is very much recommended, whether that's canoeing, kayaking and rafting on the water, or biking or mountain hiking to the nearby caves and clifftop viewpoints.
From Camping Le Moulin Vieux's local town of Brengues, take one of the several trails overlooking the Célé valley for more spectacular views, or drive from the town to one or more of the other handsomely scenic villages in the region, like Corn and tiny Espagnac-Sainte-Eulalie; and high-up Cambes or Boussac, with ancient ramparts, 15th-century buildings and 12th-century castle.
Also nearby are the famed and viewsome village of Figeac, a medieval must-see with ancient buildings, narrow streets and old half-timbered houses. Start off at the tourist office in the 13th-century Hotel de la Monnaie for Figeac info, then amble around the Musée d'Ecriture for a read of the history of writing through the centuries, including the tale of how clever boffins decoded the writing on the Rosetta Stone.
