Sitting at the entrance to the scenic Azun Valley, Camping l'Idéal makes an excellent base for guests looking to explore the Haute-Pyrénées – a gorgeous area full of hiking trails, cycle routes, mountain passes and charming traditional villages. This site is managed by a young couple who are passionate about both the outdoors and hospitality, so you can be sure they’ll be doing their utmost to provide a friendly, authentic experience and help guests make the most of their time in this wonderful area. They speak French, English and Spanish, and are very happy to make recommendations of places to go and things to do nearby, all tailored to your personal preferences. That might involve suggesting hiking or bike routes suitable for your tastes and abilities, helping you book adventures like rafting and climbing, or pointing you towards viewpoints, markets and thermal baths. Being mindful that everyone should move at their own pace on holiday, they’ll also leave you to chill out quietly on site if you prefer. Time on site can be spent taking dips at the outdoor pool and playing table tennis, and there’s a games room and a playground for the kids. A bread delivery service and ice cream sales cover a couple of essentials; pick up the rest of your foodie supplies (for picnics or barbecues) at the shops five minutes’ drive away in Argelès-Gazost.

There are lots of great hiking routes around the Azun Valley, starting from nearby villages and taking you through pastures and forests, and past lakes and mountain views. Keen cyclists might like to take on the challenges of the Col du Soulor (25 minutes’ drive) and Col de l’Aubisque (40 minutes), or find road routes and mountain/gravel biking areas. Meanwhile, there are various adventures around for active types – paragliding, canyoning, climbing and rafting in summer or skiing, snowshoeing and dog sledding in winter. If you’d like a quieter day out, ask on site for recommendations on places to go fishing or horse riding, or set off to visit some of the area’s scenic hotspots – perhaps Lac d’Estaing (20 minutes) or the viewpoint and observatory at Pic du Midi de Bigorre (an hour). You may also like to take a wander around the village of Arras-en-Lavedan (10 minutes’ walk), meet the big birds at Donjon des Aigles (15 minutes’ drive) or have a soothing soak in the thermal baths of Argelès-Gazost (five minutes) or Cauterets (half an hour).
