A short drive away from the site is the UNESCO-listed Aubusson village (10 minutes), famed for its tapestry-making heritage; spend half a day pottering around its narrow cobbled streets, gawping up at its hugely handsome historic buildings and exploring its tapestry museum.
If you’re in the area on a Friday, a flea and farmers' market is in Felletin (20-minutes) for procuring local produce and precious local bargains.
Should the kids not quite be of the history-appreciating age or antique-hunting persuasion, take them instead to Aubusson’s indoor pool complex to set them off whooshing down waterslides – the added bonus is that it’s got something for grownups too, as it’s cleverly been kitted out with a sauna and a hammam to get all steamily relaxed among.
