Longing for a bit of peace on your outdoor break? You’ll certainly get plenty of that when you book a stay at family-friendly Camping de La Rode, set deep among pines and deciduous trees at an altitude of 3,600 feet in the Lozère foothills. Ludovic Brunel and his team welcome you to their quiet tree-shaded site. Quiet doesn’t mean nothing to do though. Kids can make the most of the playground installed in 2023, challenge parents to a gentle bit of family competition on the pétanque court or settle down to play cards in the games room. Your four-legged pals are welcome too, and there are lots of walks to discover in the woodland surrounding the campsite or around scenic Lac de Naussac (10 minutes’ drive), which is also water-sports central for active families. Foodwise, breakfast is taken care of with a daily bread and pastry drop-off service, and you can pick up provisions to grill on the barbecue from Langogne (10 minutes) supermarkets. There’s also a food market there every Saturday (and Tuesday morning in summer too).

Sporting families can head for the River Allier (15 minutes’ drive) for a spot of rafting or canyoning. If that sounds too hardcore, divert to Lac de Naussac (10 minutes’ drive) for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking and kitesurfing escapades. Still too much effort? There’s supervised swimming from pebble lakeside beaches in July and August. If you’d prefer to strike out on foot, there are miles upon miles of marked trails around the campsite. The Grande Randonnée 4 pathway passes within five minutes’ walk of the pitches, and the Robert Louis Stevenson Trail (GR 70) also stops at Langogne (10 minutes’ drive). Cyclists and mountain bikers can amuse themselves at VTT du Gévaudan (50 minutes), where there are tracks for all abilities. Younger kids may like a morning cuddling donkeys, piglets and rare-breed sheep at La Toison d’Or (15 minutes), while older kids hone their skills on high ropes, climbing courses and e-scooters at lakeside Rondin Parc (10 minutes).
