Mightily viewsome vistas and loads to do all around are what you’ll most excellently get with a stay at Les Chalets de la Margeride, a lodge park looking out towards the Margeride mountains. This swish site is set among meadows and pastures, within handy reach of the GR 4 walking trail and a short walk from angling at the Truyère river. The area is also primed for days spent outdoors trying out other pursuits, from ziplining and via ferrata climbing to horse riding and fishing in rivers and lakes. Lots of handy tourist info to help your plan your days off site is at the reception building – constructed handsomely using stone hewn from the region’s granite rocks – and you can buy ice creams, drinks, postcards and other bits here too. There's also a bar with a roomy terrace, overlooking the covered pool that strips off its roof to become alfresco on sunny days. Leisure facilities include playgrounds, badminton and a ping pong table. Should you wish to wander off site, mountain bikes are available to rent, or you can take your own two feet on a hike direct from base to join the GR 4. When it comes to mealtimes after a long hike or bike ride, bring your burgers and sausages over to the communal barbecue area to sizzle up a storm.

Get stuck into outdoor pursuits of all sorts with organised excursions around the local area; conduct a self-guided along the nearby GR 4, or rent a mountain bike on site to tour the pretty local countryside on two wheels. Also available locally for equestrian types and tiddlies are guided horse tours and pony rides, and for lovers of lofty heights, a ziplining and treetop adventure park and via ferrata climbing routes are within easy reach too. If you prefer your outdoor activity to be by the water, then fishing in local rivers and lakes is a topping option too, with the banks of the Truyère river a short stroll from base. And to see an utterly spectacular railway bridge that spans the waters of the Truyère, head to the Garabit viaduct near Ruynes-en-Margeride within half an hour’s drive.
