Camping Le Clos Virgile

In the Orpellières protected natural site, on six hectares of woodland and within oh-so-easy reach of the Sérignan Plage beach is a top spot for seaside hols: Camping Le Clos Virgile, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from Sérignan in the Hérault department of Languedoc-Roussillon. Beachy days are a must to get guests started hereabouts. It’s a 10-minute walk from the site to the fine sands of the nearest beach (around 600 metres away) for strolls, swims and sunbathing, and more oceanside stretches are nearby at Valras-Plage (10 minutes’ drive), Portiragnes Plage (20 minutes) and Agde (25 minutes). Of course, cooling off can be handily done on site too, where guests can splash about in the sprawling waterpark. An outdoor pool – with a slide and two paddling pools – is in place when the weather suits, and a heated indoor pool will keep the family busy on days when it doesn’t. Need some unwinding time? Head straight to the outdoor hot tubs in the site’s relaxation area. If days spent in the dry more appeal, opt instead for games on the multisports field, rounds of pétanque, or some time on the trampoline and inflatables in the playground. During high season, guests can also sign up for a whole host of sports tournaments, while the kids toddle off on adventures with the kids’ club and teens’ club. Reunite the family for a bite to eat at restaurant Le Ti’Lolo (where pizzas, paella and lots more are served eat-in or take-out), or order something small on the fly during the day with a pitstop for ice creams and cold drinks at Le Sun Bar. In the mood for self-catered instead? There’s a grocery store on site where guests can buy all the essentials.

Stays should get off to a busy start in nearby Sérignan (five minutes’ drive), where guests can wander around the regional contemporary art museum, visit the local market, or get competitive on the go-karts. A host of other seaside resort towns are within easy reach too, including Valras-Plage (10 minutes) where, as well as cavorting on beaches, guests can chance luck at the casino or work on the building blocks of a top holiday at the Lego museum. On days when larger urban trips are called for, head along to Béziers or (and?) Agde, both of which are about 25 minutes from base. The former is a must for its ruined Roman amphitheatre and famed Fonsérannes Locks, while the latter should entice dinosaur fans and thrill seekers. For more hair-raising adventures, make the 20-minute journey to rides and rollercoasters at Europark Vias Plage, or unwind instead with stops at either of the two wineries within 20 minutes.
