An outdoor pool (of course – that’s de rigueur for these parts). And beyond that a lake (and not just any old lake – the largest lagoon in all of Languedoc-Roussillon). And then beyond that, a massive stretch of sandy beach leading to the sparkling waters of the Mediterranean Sea… The place offering up this generous collection of watery outlooks is Camping Beau Rivage, on the edge of the harbour town of Mèze and with a few minutes’ stroll separating it from a sandy beach on the Étang de Thau. This prime position means easy access to lakeside leisure of all sorts – settle in for the duration right there on the beach, take to the local paths for a walk or bike ride (hiring bikes on site if you’ve not brought yours along), or venture out onto the water for days learning the ropes of sailing. An edge-of-town location means that dining’s a doddle too… a supermarket and bakery are a couple of minutes’ stroll away for your eating-in supplies, and a 10-minute amble will take you to the town centre for market browsing or a meal of seafood and wine on the harbourside. Back at base, facilities scattered around the tree-filled gardens include a swimming pool and paddling pool, a multisports court and a playground. Throughout the summer there are daily activities for small sorts (aged six and over) and evening ents for all ages on the terrace of the bar-restaurant.

Want to take to the water? Sailing and kitesurfing lessons are to hand in Mèze, along with boat tours to see the local oyster and mussel beds. For more watersports, set off for Sète on the other side of the lake (20 minutes’ drive), where you can spend days scuba diving, jetskiing, windsurfing or kayaking along the coastline. There’s also a mighty fine 10-kilometre stretch of sandy beach down here. Not had enough of the aquatic antics yet? Carry on to Cap d’Agde (half an hour’s drive) for a waterpark and a floating inflatable obstacle course, or visit the huge Planet Ocean World aquarium in Montpellier (half an hour away). Time for a glass of wine? Dry off a little and hire a bike on site to pedal off to the vineyards and wineries just outside Mèze, for samples and scenic lake views. If you’re travelling with tiddlers, aim for the Dinosaur Museum north of Mèze or the zoo in Bouziges instead (each takes about 20 minutes’ cycling).
