Pool day or beach day? No need to choose when you pitch up at Camping 123 Sud Vacances, a welcoming and prettily landscaped site at Agde, a lively seaside resort in the Hérault. It’s got its own swimming pool, and the soft sands of Plage Richelieu are less than 10 minutes’ drive away. So there you are – it’s a win-win. Set amid a shaded forest that’s home to mature pines – and the red squirrels that live among them – the site is a great base for families, with handy facilities to make life a cinch including a launderette, a shower block and washing-up areas. You can cook up a storm on the communal barbecues – there are food shops within a few minutes’ walk – or head into Agde (five minutes by car) to dine on fish fresh pulled out of the Étang de Thau at seafront bistros. As well as the swimming pool, you can keep the kids busy on site with games of pétanque or hire bikes and get out exploring the local 43-km network of cycling paths. As well as leisurely days splashing around in the Med, there are facilities for horse riding, golf and sailing within 20 minutes’ drive.

There are several sandy beaches to choose from; Plage de Rochelongue (five minutes) and its neighbour Plage Richelieu (10 minutes) are popular hubs for watersports, and both are backed by ice-cream parlours, cafés and restaurants. Cap d’Agde Naturist Beach (15 minutes) is clothing-optional if you fancy an all-over tan. The kids will love you forever if you take them to have fun on the lazy river and wave pools at Aqualand Cap d’Agde (five minutes), where there are some seriously hardcore waterslides too. There’s watery fun to be had for younger kids at Pirate Cove (also five minutes), with its splash pools and pirate-themed shows featuring sword fights. If you’d like to sneak a bit of sightseeing into your Agde schedule, you can see Greek amphoras and classical sculptures recovered from ancient shipwrecks at the Musée de l’Éphèbe (10 minutes). And of course, you can have a wander around the narrow streets of Agde’s historic centre to discover buildings built of volcanic stone sourced from Mont Saint-Loup (15 minutes) – an easy climb just north of the town for stunning views down to the Mediterranean.
