Close to where the Gard region meets the Ardèche – and with the Cévennes National Park just up the road – sounds like an excellent spot for a family holiday, doesn't it? And right in that very location is Domaine Le Clos des Capitelles, where family-sized cottages have been set up in a lovely 10-acre wooded park close to lots of great attractions.
Surrounded by lavender fields, this peaceful and attractive park is five minutes’ drive from Barjac (a handy place to find shops and places to eat), and within easy reach of lots of the area’s top sights including the Gorges de l’Ardèche, Pont d’Arc and Aven d’Orgnac. Your day trips could take you to listed villages, caves, castles, Provençal markets and treetop adventure courses, to name but a few.
There’s direct access to a number of hiking and bike trails from the site; in July and August, guided hikes can be arranged to get you started. Nearby providers can also sort you out with days of activities like horse riding, canyoning and canoeing (often with a discounted rate for guests; ask at reception).
There’s a good amount of activities to join in with on site too. From June to the end of August, sign up for yoga, pilates and sophrology sessions. The play area, table tennis, open-air pool, pétanque court, fitness centre and games room are on hand at all times too for further entertainment, as is a kids' club (for ages five to 12).
All sounding a bit too active? Take some time in the sauna and spa or sign up for some pampering with beauty treatments, massages, osteopathy or naturopathy. In high season, you can add in some snacks or a treat from the ice cream parlour.

This is a gorgeous part of the world, with Gorges de la Cèze just five minutes' drive away. The edge of the UNESCO-listed Cévennes National Park is about 20 minutes’ drive away, and there are also some great walks in places like Les Concluses de Lussan (35 minutes), Païolive Woods (half an hour) or the trail to Sautadet Falls (25 minutes).
The geology of this area has left it with some amazing sights – particularly around the Gorges de l’Ardèche (half an hour). Walks and scenic drives will show you some of the scenery, but the most popular way to do it is to canoe from Vallon-Pont-d’Arc (20 minutes) for views of the huge stone arch Le Pont d’Arc.
The sights extend below ground here, too, to caves like Aven d’Orgnac (15 minutes), Chauvet caves (25 minutes), Grotte de la Salamandre and Grotte de la Cocalière (both 25 minutes).
