A handy stopover between Paris and seaside Deauville at roughly an hour’s drive from both, Camping les Escales also makes a wonderfully peaceful base for longer explorations of Normandy. Whatever your holiday plan, this leafy spot on the outskirts of the lively town of Louviers has lots of family-friendly amenities and a thoroughly laid-back vibe that will tempt you to linger on site. Neatly manicured grass pitches are divided by trees and hedges, ensuring everyone has plenty of privacy. If you forget anything for the kids, hire gear like high chairs and folding cribs from reception, and you can keep everyone neat and shiny thanks to the token-operated washing machine and dryer in the laundry room. Kids can scoot around happily at the play area, and you can all get together as a family to play pétanque or have a splash around in the heated outdoor pool (open during high season only). Saturday night is party night in high season, when the on-site catering service also ramps up, with bread and pastry delivered each morning, breakfast served at the snack bar and a steady supply of kids’ favourites like burgers, chips and pizzas available all day. Should you need anything else, there are supermarkets, delis and a pharmacy in the cobbled streets of Louviers (five minutes’ drive).

不喜欢 Lacking facilities such as toilet paper or soap in washrooms.

喜欢 Hele vriendelijke eigenaar. Prachtige camping middag in het bos tussen super oude bomen. Sanitair is wat verouderd, maar schoon. Heerlijke douche. Wij zijn fietsers en hebben hondjes mee in de fietskar maar durfde het niet aan om hier te fietsen helaas. Camping ligt op een berg, met een krongelweg vannacht en naar de stad.

The lay out of the pitches.
The cafe. The kids loved that we could buy chips to go with our barbeque.

不喜欢 Having to wait until 1pm to be able to gain entry.
The toilets were somewhat basic with no toilet roll so be prepared.
Unable to buy more washing tokens in the morning so was stuck with taking wet clothes with us.

喜欢 A sweet petite campsite that felt very safe for a female solo traveller. The owner/manager was really welcoming and helpful and even managed to find spare tent pegs when I realised I had forgotten mine and there was nowhere to buy any!

Lots of friendly Dutch families, very quiet and peaceful site, totally silent after 11pm! A nice place for children.

Pitches separated by bushes and very private.

Communal shower block, toilets and sinks were simple, no fuss. Most campers had a van or chalet so not many using the facilities.

I didn't get to try out the swimming pool because it was raining when I arrived. The restaurant/bar was cute and had pizza's, ham and chips and chicken.

Good wifi.

Friendly local cat made the stay for me and we shared tuna for dinner :) A pleasant stay.

不喜欢 Everything. Poor welcome, being overcharged. Pitches too small for sprinter camper, so absolutely no good for larger motor homes. 95% residential. Nothing like described by pitch up!

In the (unlikely) event that the kids should tire of the swimming pool, they can have a romp on the go karts, treetop climbing courses and bouncy castles at Tolysland amusement park (half an hour’s drive), or get down with the red pandas and lorikeets in the glasshouse at Biotropica (25 minutes). If you all need to run off some energy, the indoor themed games at Urban’Paintball (20 minutes) should do nicely. For a dip into local culture, check out the half-timbered medieval houses, the ornate flying buttresses of Gothic-era Church of Notre-Dame and crumbing remains of the Cloître des Pénitents in Louviers (five minutes), sitting prettily on multiple channels of the River Eure. Learn more about the town’s textile-making past at the Museum of Louviers, with its displays of old weaving looms side-by-side with Impressionist paintings. Talking of the Impressionists, a 45-minute drive sees you at the spectacular and famed Jardin de Monet in Giverny, where you can spot the waterlily pond and bridge that featured in so many of the artist’s paintings and have a nose around his studio.
