Camping La Liscia

Camping La Liscia is, quite simply, a cracker of a Corsican site on the western side of this fab French island. About 25 kilometres from the capital, Ajaccio, it’s just at the foot of the mountains flanking Calcatoggio and 600 metres from Liscia beach. Sounds ace so far? Wait – there’s more. The team behind this much-recommended park have had a good 20 years to make the place as appealing as possible, adding a restaurant, bar and pizzeria, along with a food shop with a deli section selling Corsican cheese and charcuterie. Craft a picnic spread to lay out under the site’s trees or down by the small stream, letting the kids splash in the water as you sample the local grub. Kids are huge fans of bouncing up and down on the site’s inflatable games, causing havoc at the two play areas and indulging in endless games of table tennis, too. Tear them away from this assortment of activities by renting bikes from reception to rove around the local area, either into the hills or along the Mediterranean Sea. A bus stops right in front of the park for pootling around on public transport too – fantastic for folk less than enamoured with sitting on the saddle. After days out at the watersports club in Coggia (20 minutes), stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, surfing or pedal boating, retreat to the site’s pétanque court for a game of the locals’ fave sport. Alternatively, if you’re one for investing in trinkets to remind you of happy times, swing by the site’s souvenir shop and have a browse.

Corsica’s not short of buff beaches. Stick to Lisca, a mere 10 minutes’ walk from the site for sunbathing and scuba diving, or paddle in the Med at other sandy spots such as the famed Mare É Sole (55 minutes’ drive). Fancy a change from the coast? Point your compass towards the ghost village of Muna (50 minutes) in the mountains, then wander around the waterlilies at Lac de Creno, a lake a little further on (an hour and five minutes). Alternatively, go horse riding around Coggia (20 minutes), rafting and canyoning from Vico (30 minutes), or seek out the wineries around Ajaccio (35 minutes). Urban adventures are to be had in this pretty port town too, the birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte and with a museum dedicated to the notorious corporal. Another unmissable place to peruse on this isle is the coastal Calanques de Piana (55 minutes) area, a range of rocks in a bright red colour set off by the deep blue sea.
