It’s Champagne all round for guests at Camping La Croix Badeau… the Champagne-Ardenne region, that is – surrounds that are stacked with splendid attractions. If you’ve got a special occasion to celebrate (a birthday, an engagement, a Wednesday…) there are indeed numerous wineries within a 20-minute drive where you can raise a toast with a glass of the sparkling stuff. Family hols demanding that you stay sober (at least until sundown)? A similar length of drive can get you to the outdoorsy activities of the Forêt de l’Orient Regional Natural Park, or the excellent Nigoland theme park. Getting to all these (and any other destination you may be planning) is straightforward, for the site is in a nifty setting a few minutes’ drive from the D960 main road – handily close but just far enough away to keep guests well away from any road noise. Also handily close is the village of Soulaines-Dhuys, a five-minute stroll away for supplies to cook up on your barbecue back at base. If there are times when you can’t face such an expedition, settle in on site with something from the snack bar instead. With meals so easily sorted, that leaves more time for chilling out on site, taking dips in the open-air swimming pool, supervising the small sorts as they scamper around the little playground or wandering next door to the public park, where there’s a larger playground and spaces for games of tennis, football and pétanque.

喜欢: The manager was lovely. He was helpful and couldn’t do enough for his clients. The surrounding countryside and village were lovely. The pitches were a good size and all had little hedges round them. We will definitely go back.

喜欢: WHAT a fabulous, peaceful haven this campsite is. We had an absolutely dreamy time here on a two night stay. Swam in the pool (cool and delightful), hung out with one of the resident cats, totally chilled out and enjoyed the chips and beer from the snack bar. Facilities fine, clean and comfortable. Really friendly, relaxed and helpful owners.

Take a foray to the Forêt de l’Orient Regional Natural Park (20 minutes’ drive) for woodland walks and lake activities – fishing, waterskiing and birdwatching are all popular picks. For more aquatic antics, head to Lac du Der (25 minutes) for canoeing, sailing, waterside horse rides and beaches to swim from. Many famed historic celebs have passed this way over the centuries – learn a little about them by spending time at the Napoleon Museum in Brienne-le-Château (20 minutes), the Mémorial Charles De Gaulle (25 minutes) and Château de Cirey (25 minutes), one-time hangout of the writer Voltaire, and the place that inspired many of his bestsellers. A sure hit for a nipper-pleasing day out is Nigoland theme park (20 minutes), one of the country’s most popular parks with shows and a range of rides both extreme and gentle. Got a bit of grownup time? Take a trip to Colombé-la-Fosse (20 minutes) to raise a glass or few at one of the Champagne houses dotted around the village.
