Action-packed adventures or low-key lazy days: little Luzy’s a lovely spot for either type of hols. And just on the edge of town, also-little Camping Champ Thierry is in a cracking location with cafés, restaurants and a supermarket all within a few minutes’ stroll.
This is a particularly fine spot if you’d like your hols to feature plenty of chances to graze or gorge on tasty foods: the town’s weekly market, deli, farm shop and bakery should provide all the fodder you need for an excellent evening barbecue, with accompaniments and desserts being sourced from the wine shop and patisserie/chocolaterie. And if you can’t be faffed with foraging, takeaway burgers, pizzas and other scoffs can be had on site.
Building up an appetite for your feast should be fairly straightforward, for this Burgundy site is within the bounds of the Morvan Regional Natural Park, a fab place for a multitude of activities including hikes, mountain biking, fishing, horse riding and rafting. That’s not to say such things are demanded of you, bien sûr – those leaning more towards the lazy days can take leisurely wanders around vineyards, châteaux and Roman sites.
However you’ve elected to fill your hours, your slumbering base is a peaceful and petite place, surrounded by trees and with all the essential amenities in place, including a washing-up area, shower and toilets.

Active types should find more than enough to keep them busy in the Morvan Regional Natural Park – hikes and bike rides cater for all levels of fitness and take in forest trails, hill climbs and village visits. Popular Lac des Settons is around an hour’s drive away for sailing, windsurfing and other watersports; you can take a dip there too, or cool off closer to home at Luzy’s swimming pool, a kilometre from the site.
If you’re more of a seeking-out-historic-sites sort, make a beeline for Bibracte, an ancient hillfort half an hour away, or venture to the pretty Chateau de la Verrerie (45 minutes’ drive) and Château de Couches (55 minutes). Autun, half an hour away, makes a top day out with ramparts and Roman ruins to ramble around.
Those with tiddlers in tow may like to check out the kid-friendly amusement parks Diverti’Parc and Parc des Combes (20 and 40 minutes away respectively). Meanwhile, folks who’ve wrangled a bit of grownup time can beetle off to Beaune (an hour and 15 minutes away) for gently squiffy days meandering around vineyards (and oui, you can get there by train to avoid altercations over whose turn it is to drive).
