The seaside resort of Granville (45 minutes’ drive) is the birthplace of fashion designer Christian Dior, and his childhood home – a pink mansion overlooking the sea – is now a museum displaying some of his elegant creations. Peacocks and ducks roam around the Parc du Val ès Fleurs on the outskirts of town.
Mont Saint-Michel (50 minutes) is a world-famous tidal island topped by a mighty abbey with slender Gothic spires. A long footbridge makes it possible to reach the island regardless of the tides these days, and when you get there you can explore the medieval village, with its defensive towers and museums.
Caen (an hour) has a lively town centre spreading around an 11th-century castle built by William the Conqueror. Check out the exhibits at the Musée de Normandie or visit the Botanical Garden, with its large greenhouse.
