Well now, this is a watery place. Camping Les Vernières is set along the Dordogne river in La Bourboule, about a kilometre and a half from a lake in which to dip one's toes, and – billy bonus – with an aqua park right on site where damp (and warmth) seekers will find a whirlpool bath, a sun terrace, a slide, a hammam and a sauna (subject to entrance fee). On site, sports and leisure seekers have a sports court, ping pong, table tennis, table football, and a heated swimming pool open from mid-May to mid-September, while kids can whizz around the playground, trampoline and bouncy castle. Events are organised throughout high season, such as theme nights, live music and karaoke – and you won't have to miss major sports events either as they'll be screened on site. Les Vernières also has a snack bar serving fast food, bread and pastries.

Adventure parks and serene spa days are both within reach of Camping Les Vernières – perhaps a day at the former followed by a soothing pamper at Les Grands Thermes de La Bourboule…? The Fenestre Park in La Bourboule has a playground as well as many activities for kids, while Mont-Dore Aventures comes with treetop adventures, canyoning and a via ferrata. Also in the area, the Auvergne Regional Nature Park is Europe's biggest regional park and has the largest group of volcanoes on the continent in Monts Dômes, Monts Dore, the Cézallier, the Artense and the Monts du Cantal.
