If you’re looking for a little wildlife haven with lots of activities to get stuck into during the day and a peaceful place to chill out in the evening, you should certainly take a look at Camping Sérendipité. This Auvergne site is just on the outskirts of the village of Neuvéglise-sur-Truyère, with gorgeous views out over the neighbouring valley. It’s also dotted with trees, adding to the peaceful atmosphere with gorgeous areas of shade, privacy and the sweet smell of pine. If you're ever taken by a sudden urge to go hiking, there are plenty of options, since Camping Sérendipité is straddled between Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne and Aubrac Natural Regional Park (the outskirts of which are both handily within a 15-minute drive). Keener on aquatic destinations? Simply head to Gorges de la Truyère, within five minutes' drive, for waterfront walks and days of fishing. There is also an activity centre half an hour's drive away. There are several châteaux and other attractions around too if that’s more your style. It's a short 10-minute walk into the village from this site, where there is a bakery, a convenience store and a butcher where you can pick up bits for the barbecue back on site (and the village also has a bar where you can fortify yourself for the walk back…) Other facilities on site include a launderette, a washing-up area and bathrooms with toilets, showers and disabled access.

喜欢: Lovely quiet elevated location on grass with trees. Lovely hot water. It wasn’t the best campsite to judge as it was pouring with rain which then turned to snow which was very dramatic in early November but apparently is normal at 1000m. Very pretty drive off main road en route from South of France nr Spain to ports in North. An absolutely gorgeous village - must visit the Boulanger and Boucherie (which is also a deli) also a fromagier but didn’t have time to call in. Pretty views of happy cattle nearby.

不喜欢: No toilet seats, unusual electric but kindly lent us an adapter- merci!

喜欢: Very friendly helpful owner. Beautiful scenery, well laid out site. Good facilities, very clean and peaceful. Nice warm showers. Good Wi-Fi at pitch .

喜欢: I booked this site at short notice whilst on route to Spain. I was looking for a campsite that allowed dogs to pitch up a tent, however, once I saw that it was £30 per night for a chalet with electrics and fridge/microwave, etc; then it was a no brainer. Lovely basic site near to Saint Flour and Le Lioran. Went hiking up to summit of Plomb Du Cantel (1,855m) and really enjoyed the ambiance.

喜欢: Le calme, la tranquillité, l’espace entre les chalets qui sont confortables, la campagne, les animaux sont admis.

不喜欢: Les toilettes un peu éloigné des chalets, d’autres sanitaires seraient appréciables.

Up for a hike? You’ll have plenty of choice when staying here – Camping Sérendipité is sandwiched between the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park and the Aubrac Regional Park, with the borders of both about 15 minutes’ drive away. Prefer watery views? Head down to the Gorges de la Truyère (20 minutes) for waterside walks and fishing days – there’s also an activity centre half an hour away where you can have a go at paddleboarding, canoeing and other watersports or just stretch out on the beach area. Meanwhile, if you’d prefer to dangle in the air, head to Truyère Evasion (15 minutes) for ziplines and a high ropes course or via ferrata climbing. All a bit too energetic? Set off instead to explore hilltop Château d’Alleuze (20 minutes) and the classic medieval turrets of Château de Rochebrune (10 minutes) or feed your brain with the geological exhibits at Museum of Geothermal Energy and Thermalism (15 minutes).
