Four wooded hectares and rivers, volcanoes and forests within driving distance? Sounds peaceful, indeed – and definitely enticing for outdoorsy types of people too. Tenderly cared for, the pretty flowers and green setting of Camping Le Mont Libre are among the things previous guests (and a national award) mention. A swimming pool (open during high season) and a tennis court are among the other popular parts of the site – and facilities have been thought out well too, with the bathrooms accessible for people with reduced mobility. Halfway between the Bourbon countryside and the Auvergne (where there are volcanoes like Puy de Dôme and the splendid landscapes of the Val de Sioule), it's highly likely you'll soon be sharing top tips about all the different sceneries nearby with fellow guests. To see it for yourself, drive over to the Gorges de la Sioule in just half an hour, where there’s a via ferrata route along the 150-metre-high rocks alongside the gorges. A canoeing and rafting centre for the river is also 15 minutes’ drive away. If you’re keen to get active in other ways, head to the 18-hole golf course of Golf Vichy Forest of Montpensier 15 minutes’ drive away. It’s also possible to go horse-riding in Begues (on Arabian thoroughbreds, no less). With markets and flea markets within driving distance of the site too, a lazy day is also well spent browsing local stalls.

喜欢: It was fine, good sized, flat pitch with beautiful views. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Not far off motorway, access was okay for 7.5 metre van.

不喜欢: No toilet seats, it's a little dated, needs upgrade but everything works, it's clean and tidy.

不喜欢: Hook up was too far away from pitch for my lead. Was actually in the middle of the 2 opposing pitches.

喜欢: Site is v conveniently situation as we're moving from South to northern France. pretty flowers. had to change pitch as electric wouldn't reach. host had no probs moving us. convenient wash area. had lovely trip out to chouvigny chateux/sioule gorge and picniced by river should.

喜欢: The site is nice, toilets are relatively clean, small convenient restaurant. Nice small swimming pool. Relatively near the highway.

不喜欢: Our tent got invaded by ants. People at the reception couldn't find my reservation (lucky I carried a copy).

Family-friendly attractions are in abundance in these parts. There are zoo animals and roller coasters at Le Pal (an hour and five minutes’ drive), a theme park at Vulcania (50 minutes) and treetop adventure courses at Adventure park the Auvergne perched (half an hour). Learn about former times at L'Aventure Michelin (40 minutes), a museum about the Michelin group, or PALEOPOLIS (five minutes), a palaeontology museum. For a real-life exhibit, Château Rocher (half an hour) overlooks the Sioule river valley. If things like picnics, walks and sublime scenery are your first priority, waste no time in getting to Panorama du Méandre de Queuille (45 minutes), a famed horse-hoe river bend. Swimming and picnics are a treat at Le Gour De Tazenat (35 minutes), a crater lake. Railbikes also run through the countryside at Vélorail Sioul (10 minutes). Further afield on the Puy de Dôme side are the Cave of the Volvic stone (35 minutes), the ski resort of Le Mont-Dore (an hour and 15 minutes), the hilly Lac de Guéry (an hour and 15 minutes) and two famed volcanoes: Puy Pariou (an hour and 15 minutes) and Puy de Dôme (50 minutes).
