A riverside setting, three peaceful hectares of woodland to potter about in, and a fab freeform pool to laze by… Domaine De Guillalmes five minutes’ drive from Fumel certainly has things well sorted for peeps seeking chilled-out family hols. This is the Lot-et-Garonne region, so let it not surprise you that the scenic river flowing past the site is the Lot itself. Fishing folks can hire boats on site to truffle out promising angling areas, and there are traditional barge cruises a few minutes away if you’re more into simply taking in the views. More energetic sorts might like to hire canoes for a watery paddle, bring or hire bikes for outings on the Lot Valley cycle route, or grab some pals for games at the two multisports pitches. Pétanque, table tennis and a playground are also on site, and there’s a bunch of family activities to join in with during the summer. Something even more laidback in mind? Claim a sun lounger on the sun terrace and spend the day dipping in and out of the pool or bubbling in the hot tub while les enfants splash in the paddling pool. No need to haul yourself away when hunger strikes – the snack bar has been thoughtfully placed right by the pool, so it’s a mere short trot to get a tray of tapas or a coffee. They’ll even serve you up a cocktail to help you raise a toast to the excellent art of doing nothing...

Helmet on, picnic packed (ideally with morsels from the local markets) and you’re all set for a day of biking along the Lot Valley cycle route. A full 160 kilometres awaits if you’re feeling really energetic, but no one will think the less of you if you’d rather stick to a shorter chunk – there are plenty of little villages and vineyards to distract you along the way. The views are pretty good from a bit higher up too – see for yourself on the treetop trails at Parc En Ciel adventure park, 25 minutes away. All sound a little too… active? See the scenery slowly drift past from the deck of a traditional gabarre on a barge trip from Fumel, a few minutes’ drive from the site. And you’ll be wanting to squeeze in a château visit or two, too, no doubt – there are some mighty pretty ones around these parts. Riverside Château de Fumel five minutes away is your closest, although you should also consider making a detour for the gorgeous medieval Chateau de Bonaguil (10 minutes’ drive) and Château Lacapelle Cabanac (15 minutes), where you can sip wines next to the vineyards from which they sprang.
